Literacy Month Kicks Off
Adopt-a-Library and Dictionary Distribution at Bodden Town
On Tuesday, Sunrise marked International Literacy Day and Rotary Literacy Month by "adopting" the library at Bodden Town Primary School. New books will be donated to the library during the 2015-16 school year; some of the books are designed for recreational reading, others are reference and textbooks made possible by community donations during the club's "Buy a Kid a Book" fundraiser every March.
The club will also supply beanbag chairs and other small furnishings, and volunteers will assist with organizing and scanning the library's inventory. Sunrise Rotarians are also active in reading on a regular basis to school students around Grand Cayman. The main aim of the Adopt-a-Library project is to encourage the students and teachers at BTPS to make more use of the school library and the books.
At the Adopt-a-Library event, Councillor and PP Winston Connolly joined President Christine and Literacy Director Su in presenting new dictionaries to all 38 of the school's Year 5 students. Similar gifts will be given to Year 5 students at other select schools during Literacy Month. The BTPS students then provided some entertaining and informative readings of poems and essays on literacy and other important issues to them.
Rotary Sunrise is deeply thankful to Deputy Principal Ms. Litrico and everyone on the staff of BTPS for making the Adopt-a-Library program possible, successful and fun.
