Guaruma Supplies Needed
Small Items Make a Big Difference
Sunrise Rotarians are starting to collecting clothing and other small items that will be greatly appreciated by the families to be helped on our next Guaruma mission trip.
As reported in last year’s Rotary Sun, “Several members of the Sunrise Club visited the communities of Las Mangas and El Pital in the Pico Bonito National Park, Honduras, over the last weekend of September. Sunrise has a long standing relationship with ‘Guaruma’, a non-profit organization set up in 2002, to run after school educational programs in the area, focusing on environmental awareness for the local inhabitants.”
Past trips have included ophthalmic, medical and dental examinations and basic medical screening and treatment. Also, students have been taught photography. It serves an educational purposes, allows people to express themselves creatively, and sales of the artwork helps provide a source of income.
The Sunrise group provides their time and skills voluntarily, and the medical professionals who come along donate equipment and drugs.
The team will also distributes clothing which had been donated and collected by the club in anticipation of the trip.
Director Pat Steward is now accepting donations of used clothing for children and adults; toothbrushes, toothpaste and floss; non-prescription sunglasses and reading glasses. Dates for the next Guaruma trip should be confirmed shortly.
