Submitted by President Christine Mathews

Rotary Sunrise is looking for a few great Rotarians to be elected to the Sunrise Board! While the new Rotary year is still many months away, Rotary International requires that we hold elections in October so the names of the new board will be known in advance.

Two positions have already been elected, these are President and Immediate Past President. This means that by virtue of being elected to serve as President-elect this year, PE Dawn Cummings will be President next year and President Christine Mathews this year automatically becomes Immediate Past President (IPP).

The structure of the Board varies from year to year, depending on who will be serving as President and the structure they would like to have. This is particularly true of the Director positions.  A Board and the slate is presented to the Club and nominations for the positions are invited from the floor. This process is repeated at the next two meetings.

 Who can nominate and how to nominate:
  • To nominate someone to the Board you need to be a member in goodstanding (i.e. your dues need to have been paid);
  • The incoming president can also nominate those who they would like to see serve on their board; or
  • A club member (in goodstanding) can nominate another club member but, this person will have to agree first before their name is put forward and they too need to be a member in goodstanding;
  • Once all names have been proposed, the nomination will need to be seconded by another member of the Club and the name is then added to the slate. For two weeks this process is repeated;
  • At the 4th meeting of the election cycle, the actual election is held. If there are nominations from the floor then there will be a ballot. If there are no nominations from the floor, a motion will be made to accept the slate put forward, a request will be made for a seconder, and then there will be a vote on the motion;
  • Members present at the meeting will vote and if a member are absent from that meeting, they can submit their vote via email.
Members who wish to serve on the Board should be sure to speak to PP Tony as he will be managing the election process for the Club for this year. Alternatively you can also speak with any other member of the Club, this will help ensure that you are nominated.

For new members, don't be shy, you too can hold a position if you desire!  This is a great way to dive right in to the world of Rotary and get to know more about what it means to serve your community and be a part of a worldwide professional organisation.

You will get help and support along the way in your position so if you want to know more on what positions are available contact PE Dawn as you will serve on her board.
