In February 2020, Rotary Sunrise donated around 600 Usborne illustrated dictionaries across the ten government primary schools in Grand Cayman and Cayman Brac. As students now return to their classrooms, they will benefit from having these high-quality reference books which can help enhance their vocabulary and further develop their literacy skills.
This year’s sizeable donation to the government primary schools started when an educator at one school reached out asking specifically about the dictionaries following Rotary Sunrise’s similar donations in past years. At the request of teaching staff, the dictionaries were donated to be used as in-classroom resources this year (rather than being gifted to individual students) so that multiple groups of students can utilise them during lessons.
“Thank you to Rotary Sunrise for partnering with us - we are always delighted to have the involvement of the community at our school,” said Ms. Tingle, Deputy Principal at Savannah Primary School. “As the African proverb stated, ‘Omwana ni wa bhone’, meaning regardless of a child's biological parents, its upbringing belongs to the community. Our staff and students are very grateful to Rotary Sunrise for this generous donation; you have certainly played your part in the SPS community.”
Year 6 Erskine Savannah Primary School-student Alyssa Burton added her thanks saying, “I want to thank Rotary Sunrise for providing us with dictionaries. We really appreciate it!”.
“Dictionary skills are very important as they support vocabulary, comprehension, spelling and other key literacy skills,” said Su Mander, former Literacy Director at Rotary Sunrise. “Rotary Sunrise is delighted to continue its commitment to support literacy and learning in the public schools.”
