Scrabble Scrum Wants You!

Following up on last September’s successful launch of a new event
to benefit literacy programs, Rotary Sunrise and LIFE are again
joining forces to hold a special edition of the “Scrabble Scrum for
Literacy.”  The event, to be held from 4-6pm on Thursday, March 19 at
the St. Ignatius School auditorium, is an after-school contest
featuring teams from several area high schools.

Rotary Literacy Committee Chair Woody Foster and new Rotarian Su
Mander of LIFE emphasize that there will again be a corporate
sponsored Scrabble Scrum next September in conjunction with
International Literacy Day.  The high school competition is meant to
add to the Sunrise and LIFE commemorations of Rotary Literacy Month.

In the high school event, teams of six students compete in a
similar fashion of using their limited time to quickly fill a Scrabble
board with high-value words, incorporating pre-determined bonus words
and avoiding having their scores reduced by the value of unused letter
tiles.

It appears there will be at least four high schools participating
with teams in two age divisions: 11-13 and 14-16.  The only
significant departure from the corporate event is the absence of
chances to buy back some of the letter tiles that are removed in the
second and third rounds to add a degree of difficulty and fundraising.

We will need approximately 20 volunteers from Rotary Sunrise, LIFE
and participating schools in order to ensure a successful event.  The
organizers recognize that 4-6pm is more convenient for students and
teachers than for volunteers, but are optimistic that people with
available time will sign up to assist with scoring, registration and
set-up/clean-up.

If you can volunteer your time for this worthy Rotary Literacy
Month project, please contact Woody Foster, Su Mander or Patrick
Kreitlow (321-0413).

We also appreciate donations of any set of six similar items to be
used as prizes for one of the teams.
