Exciting times ahead for our new Satellite Club
"Can I have a turn today?!" That excited shout greets our volunteers every Thursday morning at Featherston School! Our reading programme is humming along, and the kids love it. We even have the happy problem of more eager volunteers than the school can fit!
This is the very first project launched by our vibrant new Literacy for Life Satellite Club. Based in the Wairarapa, it perfectly shows the interesting range of fresh things happening within the Rotary Club of Wellington. We have even more diverse projects in the pipeline!

RCW helps warm Wellington Hearts this winter
The Home of Compassion's Wellington Soup Kitchen is experiencing unprecedented demand for hot food and warm clothing. In response, our Club members stepped up & generously donated a massive haul of winter essentials to help ease the chill - hats, scarves, gloves, parkas, thermals, woollen jerseys & sleeping bags, as well as hygiene products.  
Special thanks to our convenor, Jane McCann, and to Julie Haggie, who coordinated with Bunnings Petone. Once again, Bunnings donated warm hats and socks. Thank you to everyone who contributed to making this winter warmer for our community.
 
 
 
RYLA – Inspiring Young Leaders
“I find it difficult to cope with my flaws as a leader, and it hurts to not be perfect sometimes, but RYLA has given me so much hope. For the first time in my life, I now have faith in my leadership potential.”
These words from one of RCW’s 2026 participants capture the impact of the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA) — a five‑day, high‑energy residential programme for young adults aged 18–24 held recently.
Each year, RCW sponsors several young people to attend RYLA, helping them build confidence, teamwork, and leadership skills. Run by Rotary District 9940, the programme also sees past attendees return to mentor and inspire the next generation.
Colleges Unite to Win at Parliament!
 
Students from Kāpiti and Paraparaumu Colleges joined forces to win the Rotary Club of Wellington’s (RCW) 2026 Strengthening Democracy Project. Delivering their final presentation at Parliament, the collaborative team tackled the complex future of New Zealand politics: "MMP After 30 Years – Has it delivered? What challenges remain?"
Shaping Tomorrow's Leaders
Led by RCW member Peter Cullen, this initiative empowers the next generation to engage with NZ's political system. Through inspiring experts and hands-on activities, students explored critical pillars:
  • System Safeguards: Examining checks and balances.
  • Active Citizenship: Inspiring youth to put themselves forward as future civic leaders.
