Bulletin Bulletin- February 4th, 2015 Rotarian Don Wilcox and President John Thompson thank guest speaker Steve Martin of Martin's Apples. *Announcements:* Guests: Dani Marchava - Rotaract - guest of the club Diana Greenlay - guest of Brad Swanson Neil Murray - guest of Jack Kinch (note: Neil is Board Chair of Humane Society) Bill Pegg announced Dr's Without Boarders event this Saturday President John advised the budget and foundation budget review will take place at next weeks meeting, John also advised that the meeting may take place in the Crown Plaza restaurant - will advise with next email Stephen Langan provided an early report on the Blood Donor challenge, to-date there have been 5 Rotarians and 1 guest who has taken the challenge President John took a straw poll and determined that our club may have 2 tables for March 23rd visit by Rotary International President Gary Huang at Rotary District 7080 event, John will follow up with an email *Speaker:* Karen Voisin introduced Steve Martin of Martin's Apples Steve's great, great, great grandfather Peter Martin settled in Waterloo Region in 1820, having left Pennsylvania in Conestoga wagons at age 50 with 15 of their 17 children, purchasing the original 400 acres just north of King Street, St Jacobs The homestead is The Peter Martin House at Doon Pioneer Village Martin's best selling and most expensive apple is the Honey Crisp Family eventually purchased an additional acreage bringing the total to 4,000 Today the family business resides on the western portion of the original acreage Today Steve and two other brothers own Martin's Fruit Farm - orchards were planted in the 70's at the encouragement of an exchange student familiar with apple orchards, the family originally planted 100 acres, which took 5 years before they realized the fruits of their labour Today they harvest apples from 750 acres with a production plant in Waterloo and a Apple chip plant in Elmira, the family rents and additional 300 acres Steve passionately explained the farming landscape as it is today and the challenges facing farmers, highlighting the main challenges 1. labour costs as main reason growers are discouraged, 2. utility costs, 3. food industry drive towards cheaper and cheaper consumer prices Local food movement has provided some relief to this trend and our FoodLink has been an integral part of connecting local farmers to consumers, restaurants, and local grocery stores Steve cited that innovation, technology and high density planting will have farmers continue and curtail farmers from leaving the industry and selling valuable farm lands Steve recommended we watch the TED Talk on YouTube by Rob Saik - challenges of viable food supply Don Wilcox thanked our speaker. *Birthdays* Jake Thomas Feb. 12 *Club Anniversaries* Rick Bolzon 16 yrs. Canada to Scotland Curling Exchange 2014 Rotarian Jack Kinch of the Kitchener-Westmount club is currently participating in the Canada to Scotland 2014 Rotary Curling tour. The exchange has been going on for over 50 years. Jack will spend the month of November touring Scotland and being involved in curling fellowship. Meeting Information Posted by Cameron Kozlowski The Rotary Club of Kitchener-Westmount meets every Wednesday at 12:15 p.m. at the Delta Hotel in downtown Kitchener and provides a warm welcome to all who join us. The meeting runs from 12:15 pm to 1:30 pm and lunch is served buffet style. Sometimes we meet off-site to facilitate a tour or demonstration from a local business, institution or enterprise. Club Information Posted by Cameron Kozlowski www.rotarykw.ca Our club is a very diverse group of people who share a common interest and passion for community service and fellowship. We have approximately 80 members in our club, which celebrated it's 25th anniversary in March 2006. We all work hard together to make sure our community is a great place to live, work and raise our families. All of this is done in an atmosphere of friendship, fun and common commitment to serve others. As a service club, we work hard to raise money to give back to worthwhile charitable causes in our community. We receive applications and donate funds based on the merits of the applications. We have made small and large contributions that impact the community, including large capital gifts to Catholic Family Counselling Centre, Family and Children's Services of Waterloo Region and YMCA Waterloo. The club also has a long standing commitment to the KidsAbility Centre, formerly the Rotary Centre, and makes a significant annual contribution to its operations. The club will on average raise approximately$100,000 per year. Our major fundraiser is the Vacation Fantasy Lottery, in which we sell tickets for a chance to win vacations all over the world. We also run a charity golf tournament at a local course. We are busy during Oktoberfest, hosting the kick-off luncheon and operating the Crown and Anchor wheel in Concordia's main tent. These fundraisers are held annually, and we also occasionally do other select events based on interest from the membership. Community service activities include volunteering, mentoring, youth leadership and development. The Club is an active with Rotary International participating in Rotary Foundation Giving, RYLA, International Projects and Camp Enterprise.	Club Information	Cameron Kozlowski
