Apr 11, 2018 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
Please join us at 6:00pm this Wednesday at Leucadia Pizza for our regular club meeting. There will be food, drinks, and you'll hear about upcoming events and service opportunities. Our speaker this week will Ms. Tasreen Khamisa of the Tariq Khamisa Foundation, an organization dedicated to teaching and inspiring peace, hope, and forgiveness in youth and setting them on a path towards opportunity. You can see aTED talk done by the founders here: https://www.ted.com/talks/azim_khamisa_and_ples_felix_what_comes_after_tragedy_forgiveness
If you are curious about Rotary and the many wonderful things the international humanitarian organization provides, this is a great opportunity to learn more about how you can get involved. Our club members (about 30 of us) would love to meet you and tell you all the wonderful things Rotary has done in our lives. Our meetings are fairly casual compared to most Rotary clubs: ~We have no dress code (though many members come straight from work) ~No need to know anything about Rotary - you'll get plenty of information at the meeting ~We start at 6pm, but the speakers don't begin until 6:30 (so if traffic causes you to arrive a litte after 6 that's OK) ~We meet in the patio at Leucadia Pizza, so your well behaved dogs and/or children are welcome. To learn more about Rotary, visit www.rotary.org Questions? Leave a comment in the event page or send us a message! |

Since 2006, Rotarians around the world have been going out on the last Saturday of April to do hands on service projects in their communities. Our club is no exception, and this year our RAW project will focus on doing some much needed renovations to the transitional youth home ran by the local nonprofit Urban Street Angels! This volunteer event is a great way to get introduced to Rotary if you are new to our group!

Loft Build Home in Tijuana, Mexico! Please join us the weekend of May 5th - 6th as we build a loft home for a family in need! We'll be partnering with the nonprofit Project Mercy to construct a pre-fabricated loft home and bathroom in TJ. For those who haven't done a loft home build with us before, this is a great hands-on project where by the end of the day on Saturday we will be handing a young family their first ever set of keys to a home that will keep them dry, warm, and safe. BROAD DETAILS: When: Saturday May 5th at 6:45am through Sunday May 6th at 4:00pm Where: We will be building the home in Tijuana and then having dinner and staying in Rosarito. Sunday will have various activities for people to enjoy in Rosarito. Cost: $150 per participant which covers your lodging Saturday night, transportation costs, lunch on Saturday during the build, and your portion of the materials cost for the home. Who: This trip is open to Rotarians only as we have a volunteer limit of no more than 15 people. Participants must be a fully inducted member of a Rotary Club and have gone to at least 1 volunteer event with our club already. Our club's Rotarians get top priority, but if we don't fill up the 15 spots we may invite other Rotarians who have joined us before at various events. Why: In conjunction with Project Mercy, we will be building a home for a young family in need. Wendi, a single mom age 24, and her 2 and the 3 year old children currently lives in what most Westerners would refer to as a dumpsite, literally. They are pictured below in front of their current dwelling, along with a picture of a previous loft home we built that will be similar to what we build for them. Wendi works full time in a market and earns roughly $75 per week - which as a single mom is nowhere near enough to give her kids everything she desires for them. TO DO LIST: 1) Ensure your passport is valid and bring your Global Entry card if you have one (bring the actual card, do not rely on the linkage between GE and your passport alone). For those with Global Entry, you'll be riding back across the border in one of our SENTRI vehicles. If you don't have Global Entry, you'll be dropped off in the walking line and will walk across (you won't be alone as there are several people without Global Entry) 2) We can figure out roommates once at the hotel and seeing the final room count they have available for us.They have secured 8 for us and we have 15 people going. Since it is a busy weekend we may not be able to purchase additional rooms for those who wish to room alone. If you do end up with a solo room please be aware you will owe an additional $75. The list of trip attendees is: Sarah, Mari, Tom B., Asian Tom, Laurie, Loretta, Allan, Derek, Quan, Andrew, Chris, Mark K., our new club member Satoko, and our northern Rotarians Tim M and Max B (both have attended our MX trips before). FINE DETAILS: Departure: For those with Global Entry, you may wish to meet your assigned driver near their home and park your cars there overnight vs meeting at the border and paying for parking (see below for your assigned driver and contact them directly). For those without Global Entry, you will need to park your vehicle in a paid lot near the Otay Mesa border. We will meet as a large group at the iHop parking lot at the Otay Mesa border (2390 Roll Dr. San Diego, CA 92154) at 6:45am and depart via our assigned carpool by 7am sharp. Be careful not to miss the freeway exit as there is no turnaround point after and you'll wind up driving yourself through Mexico. There is a paid parking lot just South of the iHop that is fairly cheap and safe for 24hour parking. If you are not ready to go by 7am, you will miss our caravan and will need to take yourself into Mexico.
Bring: Bring cash with you for dinner Saturday, lunch Sunday, and any snacks/drinks/souvenirs you may want. We may get a table at a club Saturday night, which can run $20-40 per person depending. Dinner/lunch may be $20-40 each depending. Bring your passports and Global Entry card if you have it. Other than that, you'll want to wear close-toed shoes and clothes you don't mind getting paint on, as we'll be working on a real construction site with paint, nails, etc. You'll want to bring a separate outfit for going out Saturday night and clothes/bathing suits for Sunday depending on what activity you wish to do. Please note that we will have very limited space for your luggage in the vehicles, so pack as lightly as possible. Meals: We will provide lunch on Saturday at the worksite, most likely pizza from a local vendor. We will also have lots of snacks and bottled water throughout the day. Once our build is completed we'll drive to the hotel, check in, and take a vote for if people want to eat first and then shower/get ready for the night out or if they can wait to eat and wish to shower/change first. Either way, we will be eating somewhere casual in Rosarito for both dinner and brunch the following day. Lodging: We will be staying at the Los Pelicanos hotel in Rosarito, a beautiful hotel right on the beach and only about half a mile away from the nightlife. They have a pool and hot tub. Because we are going on Cinco de Mayo weekend (which, although not a holiday for Mexicans, has been taken over by American tourists), most other hotels were sold out. For more info on the hotel, see https://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g150774-d169755-Reviews-Los_Pelicanos_Hotel-Rosarito_Baja_California.html. Sunday Activities: The beach in Rosarito offers ATV riding, horseback riding, along with lounging/volleyball. We will all head to the beach together and designate a common spot for those who just want to do beach stuff, and then anyone who wants to do other activities can break off and do so on their own as everything is close together. Please bring extra cash for activities if you decide to do that. Security: The State Department recently issued a level 2 travel warning for areas in Baja California, including our destinations. We will be sure to be mindful of this while down there but feel no reason to be overly alarmed. We will be in a large group and are staying at a nice hotel in the heart of the crowded tourist area. As long as we stay together and use the buddy system, there should be no issues. Still, we recommend not wearing any flashy clothing/jewelry in order not to draw extra attention. Returning: We will be coming back around 4pm on Sunday. Those with Global Entry can go back in the carpool vehicles that all have SENTRI. Those without will have to cross by foot and will be dropped off at the pedestrian line. For additional questions or concerns, please see Sarah D. at Sarah.E.Davis@Thrivent.com or 619-846-8341. Looking forward to a fun trip!

We will be meeting within the Barcelona community, outside it's eastern pool enclosure to install one of our Little Free Libraries for the residents and area neighbors. The library is 90% built and will just need finishing touches on site, as well as digging a hole and setting a post for the installation. The service project should only take about 2.5 hours and all materials will be provided. All we need are your hands and talent to help dig and mount the box. Also feel free to bring any books you don't need to donate to the Little Library. Any questions, please call San Diego Coastal Rotary Club president Craig Hothem at 858-869-1233. This project is free to attend and all members and guests are welcome. Thanks and look forward to seeing everyone on Saturday! |

Our club is hosting a rummage sale fundraiser at Kobey's Swap Meet on their nonprofit day! We will be collecting items to sell from club members throughout July and August, and then selling those items at our booth with all proceeds benefitting our club's service projects. See main event page for more details: https://www.facebook.com/
WHAT WE NEED: ~~Please begin collecting items for us to sell. Since this is a rummage sale, items do not need to be new. However, they should be only gently used, still in good condition, and with an original retail value of at least $10. Exceptions to the $10 rule are CDs, DVDs, or books, as wel can sell those in bundles. ~~Beginning with our July 11th meeting, you can start bringing donation items to our weekly meeting and Craig or Andrew will be available to collect them. No need to price items, we will do that for you. ~~We also need 4-6 volunteers to be present on the 18th and volunteer to sell and pass out information at our booth. We will split the day up between two shifts: 7am-11am and 11am - 4pm (5:30-7am setup will be handled separately). Please let Sarah D. know either by text or commenting in this event page if you're available to volunteer. It will be a fun day and a good way to polish up your sales skills!
If you cannot donate items or volunteer, please invite your friends to the main event page here: https://www.facebook.com/ |

Our speaker this week is an organization who helpsIndividuals with physical disabilities because they share the same desire of all athletes - stay active, to attain personal fitness and achieve athletic excellence. And to reap the social and psychological benefits of being part of a team or playing an individual sport. That is why Adaptive Sports and Recreation Association was founded - to give physically disabled children, adults and veterans the same opportunities as their able bodied peers. ASRA sponsors a 5 day, 14 day Junior Adaptive Sports Camp each summer for children ages 4-18. In addition, we have ongoing wheelchair basketball and tennis teams and sponsor day long clinics for wheelchair Lacrosse, rugby, kayaking, water skiing, etc. We hope you agree with us that everyone deserves the right to play!
