Since 2006, Rotarians around the world have been going out on the last Saturday of April to do hands on service projects in their communities. Our club is no exception, and this year our RAW project will focus on doing some much needed renovations to the transitional youth home ran by the local nonprofit Urban Street Angels! This volunteer event is a great way to get introduced to Rotary if you are new to our group!

DETAILS:

  • When: Saturday, April 28th. 9:30am to approximately 12/1pm
  • Where: In the Lincoln Park neighborhood just south of the 94 - exact address to be announced soon
  • Who: Urban Street Angels is a 501(c)3 dedicated to eradicating youth homelessness in San Diego. They operate a weekly overnigh...t shelter as well as an 18-month transitional housing and work program for homeless youth (age 18-25). The youth in their transitional program come straight off the streets and into a group home where they receive counseling, legal help, job training, life skills, and host of other services. They must be either employed or in school after the first few months, follow all house and behavioral rules, and have incentives in place for meeting other goals such as savings, driver’s license, etc. By the end of their stay with USA, they get additional support as they move out on their own and lead successful, fulfilling lives.
  • What: we will be painting their living room and kitchen as it currently is in terrible shape. We will also be doing some much needed house cleaning, yard work and weeding, and assembling some “move in kits” for when they get a new youth in the program.
  • Bring: please wear work clothes you don’t mind getting paint on, close-toed shoes, sunscreen or hat for working outside. We will provide waters and a pizza lunch.
  • How: our club raised $500 that the rotary district then matched, bringing us a total of $1,000 to commit to this project. RAW is one of the most important days in the rotary year, so all club members are expected to attend and guests are encouraged/welcomed.
