Overview: District Governor Lyle Ryan’s presentation will be focused on “MEMBERSHIP - MEMBERSHIP - MEMBERSHIP!” As District Governor, Lyle is very concerned about our organization and what the future holds for us if we are unable to turn the corner on maintaining and growing our ranks. Declining membership is a challenge for all service organizations, but with great ideas and diligence, Rotary has the opportunity to stabilize and increase its ranks. Bio: Lyle Ryan’s career in banking only slightly preceeds his career as a Rotarian. Since the age of 17, his banking career has included U.S. Bank, Olympic Bank, Frontier Bank and now Coastal Community Bank. He started Rotary at the age of 18, as a member of the Rotary Club of Sheridan, Oregon. He has been with the Rotary Club of Everett since 1986, serving in a number of executive roles including Assistant Governor.. He has also been involved in leadership roles in many organizations: United Way, American Diabetes Association, American Red Cross, Big Brothers-Big Sisters, Planning Commission – City of Everett, Everett Housing Authority, Leadership Snohomish County and Cocoon House. Lyle has been married to P.J. (Patricia Josephine) for 27 years and they have two children: Ramah and Ben. Both Lyle and P.J. are Paul Harris fellows understanding the importance of the work that our foundation does in the world. They have been active in the Rotary youth exchange program, and both Lyle and P.J. served their club as ambassadors to Mexico delivering wheel chairs to remote parts of that country. Lyle enjoys swimming, running and biking, and is an avid scuba diver. He has taken part in many triathlons throughout the United States. |

Overview: Kuntz and Company's Artistic Director Pam Kuntz will share both the process and outcome of sharing the stories of our neighbors through the arts. Bio: Pam Kuntz has been living and working in Bellingham, Washington since 1999 when she joined the Dance faculty at Western Washington University (WWU) where she is a Senior Instructor.She teaches and choreographs on students at Western, is a founding member of Bellingham Repertory Dance, and is the founder and artistic director of Kuntz and Company, the company whose work she will share with you today. Pam's work through Kuntz and Company has received funding from The Bossak Heilbron Charitable Foundation, The City of Bellingham, Humanities Washington, PeaceHealth, The Washington State Arts Commission, St. Luke’s Foundation, Western Washington University, WECU, the Community Food Co-Op, and the Whatcom Community Foundation. Overview: There are easy ways to focus on the process and avoid the politics that tend to overshadow even the most well-intended project. Improv is being applied to businesses to achieve painless brainstorming, planning and execution. Oona Sherman will lead you through a series of simple, easy exercises that will have you laughing your way to enhanced positivity and creative collaboration. Play is the new way to work! Bio: Oona Sherman Cava is the Director of Training and Education at The Upfront Theatre. Oona is an arts-based educator with more than fifteen years of experience in leadership training, curriculum development, and teaching. She has an M.A. in Transformative Learning & Human Development from Antioch University Midwest, and has served as adjunct faculty there in the Individualized Master of Arts program. In her work she examined the ways that improvisation can be used to improve and transform the lives of adult learners, especially in the areas of team building, creative collaboration, and social change. In addition to her work at the Upfront Theatre, she teaches Improv for Writers classes at Whatcom Community College in the Community Education Program, has served as faculty at the Chuckanut Writer’s Conference, and works within the community to bring arts-based training into schools, businesses and non-profit groups. She has also been a member of the Upfront Theatre’s Mainstage since the theater opened in 2004. |

PATH – Seattle’s Best Kept Secret in Global Health

Overview: PATH is an international nonprofit, global health organization that transforms global health through innovation. PATH’s approach blends the entrepreneurial spirit of business, the scientific expertise of a research institution, and the passion and on-the-ground experience of an international NGO. PATH was founded in Ballard nearly 40 years ago and now has a $350 Million annual budget. Much of what you hear about the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation doing in global health, they do through PATH. Yet few people know about this hometown hero. This program will provide an overview of PATH with a focus on its work in water & sanitation, something Rotary has also been deeply involved in around the world. Introduction: Jesse Schubert is a Senior Program Associate in PATH’s Technology Solutions Global Program. For the past 10 years, he has worked in PATH’s product development shop, leading and supporting the technical aspects of a variety of projects, including PATH’s woman’s condom, SILCS diaphragm, and low-cost water treatment and hand washing technologies. Jesse’s favorite part of his job is traveling to the field to connect with and learn from the people that will ultimately use the products PATH develops. Jesse will be accompanied by Jenny Andrews, a fellow Rotarian and the Relationship manager for Global Engagement at PATH. |

Overview: A presentation on the work of the US-DPRK Tuberculosis Project, the only on-going point of cooperation between the US and the DPRK (North Korea). Bio: Brad Howard is a member of Saint Paul's Episcopal Church. St. Paul's has a long history of service to our community, including support for the Interfaith Coalition, hosting Maple Alley Cafe, which provides free meals to the hungry in a dignified setting, and the Alms ministry, which together with other partners provides financial assistance to people in need. Brad has been to North Korea 5 times in the past two years, and is also active in Towards Peace in Korea, an initiative of the worldwide Anglican Communion under the leadership of the Anglican Church in South Korea. |

"Producing USFactsFirst"

Overview: RCOB’s own Rotary Club Member will tell us about creation of his new book, USFactsFirst, and what drove him to spend much of the last two years working on it. The book deals with facts in 15 different areas, including the economy, education, taxes, government, and --- without being partisan --- about politics and politicians, with data supported by non-partisan research. He'll also give us a look at some of his most surprising findings. In commenting about the project, he says, "I found it so interesting to learn so much, as well as reinforce my general knowledge about much of what we see, hear and read about our Country." Bio: When asked about himself and his background, Joe says, "I couldn't hold a job!" He has been a Procter & Gamble salesman, a phone company sales engineer, a radio station operator, a computer systems developer, a corporate division president, an office products store owner, a charter boat skipper, and now, an author. He says that he “did really well at a couple of these," and adds that he’s “hoping to at least earn a "C" as an author!" |

"Living & Working in Space"

Overview: Retired astronaut Wendy Lawrence will provide a brief overview of what it is like to live and work in the microgravity environment of space. Additionally, she will discuss some of the scientific research that is currently being conducted onboard the International Space Station (ISS). Bio: Captain Wendy Lawrence is a retired naval aviator and NASA astronaut. As a helicopter pilot, she made several shipboard deployments to the North Atlantic, Indian Ocean and Kenya. After earning a master’s degree in ocean engineering from MIT and Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI), Wendy was selected as an astronaut in 1992 and worked at NASA for 14 years. A veteran of four shuttle missions (STS-67, 86, 91 and 114), she has logged over 50 days in space. Currently, she works part-time at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, informing the public about NASA’s spaceflight programs and participating in STEM education programs. |

Overview: The Bellingham High School ShowStoppers will present a musical performance for the Rotary Club of Bellingham. About 18-20 students will be able to join us. Our program will include seasonal favorites as well as a choreographed medley entitled “Encore” this year. These are memorable songs from the last 8 decades. Bio: The Bellingham High School Showstoppers is the outstanding small mixed vocal ensemble out of three choral ensembles currently offered at Bellingham High. This exceptional group has won 1st place for the last thirteen out of fourteen years at the regional Solo/Ensemble contest. This is quite an accomplishment considering that they compete against schools of every size including those with 3,000 students while they have almost 1,000. Under the leadership of Linda Short, a 34 year veteran of the Bellingham School District, this group is often in demand to perform a variety of classical, jazz, and choreographed show music. .

Raptors of Whatcom County – Their Ecology, Behavior, and Environmental Needs

Overview: In this talk John Bower will give an overview the raptors that call Whatcom County home. He will discuss their natural history, behavior, food, and predators, as well as their population status. He will also focus on the main environmental issues affecting local raptors and discuss the best way to maintain / increase raptor populations in Whatcom County as well as noting local rehabilitation efforts for injured or sick raptors Bio: John teaches field biology, ecology, natural history, evolution, environmental issues, and folk music performance at Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies at Western Washington University. His current research involves repeating important components of the 1970’s MESA census to document recent marine bird population changes in inshore marine waters. His past research includes conservation biology of seabirds and the endemic Juan Fernandez Firecrown hummingbird on Chile’s Isla Robinson Crusoe, and acoustic communication in birds and whales.

Bio A graduate of Western Washington University with a B.A. in Exercise Science and a M.Ed. in Exercise Physiology. Has worked in the Fitness Industry since 1981 and has been the Director of Fitness and a Personal Trainer BAC since 1985. Overview: Bill will discuss how the ports of Seattle and Tacoma are transforming themselves to be globally competitive and will talk about how WA needs to do the same. He will talk about how we need to modernize transportation and education to keep jobs here in WA, and how we need to set priorities that support a job generating economy. In 1992, Bill and his wife Barbara. moved to Seattle where Bill founded a company that helps U. S. exporters open, access and expand international markets. Bill was elected to the King County/Seattle Port Commission in 2007. From 2009 to 2011 his peers elected him commission president for an unprecedented three consecutive years. In 2010, Bill was named Washington's Outstanding Local Government Official and Maritime Public Official of the Year.

Started with a small personal investment in 1989 from his home, Rud built the company into the world’s pre-eminent mobile technology solutions company with $75 million in annual revenues and 360 employees spread across the US, Canada, UK, France and Australia. Rud sold Ryzex in 2011 and now divides his time between being an elected member of the Whatcom County Council and as the CEO of Ryanna Capital, an Impact Investment company.

"The State of the Judiciary in Washington and Current Issues Before The State Supreme Court"

Bio: On October 31, 2012, Justice Barbara Madsen was unanimously elected by her colleagues to serve a second term as the 55th Chief Justice of the Washington State Supreme Court. As Chief Justice, she is the court’s chief spokesperson, presides over Supreme Court hearings and conferences, and co-chairs the state’s Board for Judicial Administration. The voters elected Justice Madsen as the third woman to serve on the Washington Supreme Court in 1992, and she was re-elected in 1998, 2004, and 2010. Justice Madsen, a native of Renton, received her undergraduate degree from the University of Washington in 1974 and earned her J.D. from Gonzaga University School of Law in 1977. While at Gonzaga, Justice Madsen volunteered many hours with Gonzaga’s University Legal Assistance Clinic and Spokane Legal Services. After completing law school, Justice Madsen worked as a public defender in King and Snohomish counties. In 1982, she joined the Seattle City Attorney’s Office and was appointed Special Prosecutor in 1984. Mayor Charles Royer appointed Justice Madsen in 1988 to the Seattle Municipal Court bench, where she served as Presiding Judge. Justice Madsen is committed to public service and equal justice. When she served as the Special Prosecutor, Justice Madsen developed the child abuse component of the Family Violence Project. After joining the bench, she began working toward the development of a Domestic Violence Coordinating Committee to comprehensively address violence in the family. As the Presiding Judge, Justice Madsen increased opportunities for women and attorneys of color to receive appointments as pro tem judges. Justice Madsen’s commitment to equal justice continues today in her role as the chair of the Washington State Gender and Justice Commission. In 1993, Justice Madsen was honored as the first recipient of the annual Myra Bradwell Award, honoring an outstanding alumna of Gonzaga University School of Law who has made great strides on behalf of women. She received the Washington Women Lawyers Vanguard Award in 1998 and 2002 for her leadership and inspiration for women in the legal profession. In 2004, Justice Madsen co-chaired the Crystal Brame Committee which secured legislation requiring all police agencies to adopt investigation protocol for police perpetrated domestic violence. Since 2005, she has led efforts to establish the Initiative for Diversity, a program encouraging legal employers to commit to and implement individual organizational plans to increase diversity and received a Social Justice Award in 2011 from The Loren Miller Bar Association for her unwavering dedication to the pursuit of justice and equality in Washington State. Chief Justice Madsen has chaired the Washington State Gender and Justice Commission since 1998. Most recently the Commission, partnering with other community groups, succeeded in passing legislation banning the shackling of women prisoners during labor. In 2010 she was named the Seattle University School of Law Woman of the Year and in 2014 she was awarded the Gonzaga Law Medal from Gonzaga University School of Law. As chief justice, she is committed to continuing the Supreme Court’s long-standing support for access to justice. Justice Madsen is a member of Washington Women Lawyers and the National Association of Women Judges. She and her husband, Donald Madsen, live in Pierce County and have four children.

He has 36 years of professional law enforcement experience, including extensive experience as a senior administrator in large and mid-sized police departments. Prior to assuming his post in Bellingham, he most recently served as Chief of Police for the City of Vancouver (Wash.) Police Department, a position he held for five years after serving as a deputy police chief and other leadership and staff positions with the City of Fort Worth, Texas. Note: BPD is the first to deploy body cameras. |

"3D Metal Printing Changes Everything"

Overview: President and CEO Roger Janssen will discuss the founding of 3DX and its strategy to become a leader of the 3D Metal Printing movement. He will share his approach to additive manufacturing based on 30 years of subtractive fabrication experience and discuss additive's influence on the future of the industry. 3D Metal printing brings a new competitive advantage to Whatcom County’s designers, manufacturers and service providers. Bio: Roger's entrance into the world of manufacturing began with a Manufacturing Certificate quickly followed by a certification as a Harley Davidson Technician. A few business development classes later, Roger started Key Manufacturing. Key provided the Puget Sound with high quality manufacturing and machining services while serving the marine, military, automotive, alternative energy, medical, and aerospace industries. In the early 2000's Roger relocated Key Manufacturing from Mukilteo to Ferndale. While machining a complex part at his Ferndale location, Roger became acquainted with the potential of 3D Metal Printing to revolutionize the industry. He quickly reorganized the company, founded 3DX and acquired the first 3D Metal Printer of its kind west of the Mississippi. When he is able to free himself from the office, Roger enjoys motorcycle trials riding with the PST (Puget Sound Trailers), boating, and fly-fishing. |
