ShelterBoxAs you may have seen in the news recently, thousands of people, many of whom are fleeing conflict from countries such as Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq, are arriving in Greece each day with few belongings and no form of shelter. Rotarian's are asking ShelterBox how they can help, so we would like to update you on the actions we are taking to help those in need.
ShelterBox has been providing life saving aid to Syrian refugees in Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq since the conflict began four years ago. Now, ShelterBox is working in Greece to provide the basic human right of shelter to these refugees as they seek asylum and safety.
ShelterBox is the official Project Partner of Rotary International. It is the best Rotary-way to impact the lives of families affected by disasters around the world and by the refugee crisis. |
Rotary Club of KindersleyOur Rotary club has always focused on the youth in our community, including: • RYPEN and RYLA – youth leadership camps • INTERACT– a youth group at the Kindersley High School that promotes service to others • An international youth exchange program • “Food for Kids” and the “Backpack Program” for local children in crisis • Scholarships at the three area high schools and the local college Recently we have supported both the Elizabeth and Westberry Schools in improving their outdoor spaces, and Creative Kids.
Internationally, we have supported a girls school in Mexico, a bus for a school in South Africa, and water wells in Africa. 2015 we donated to the Los Amigos project which sends buses, fire trucks and ambulances to Mexico. Every year we support Shelterbox and Polio Plus.

Why does the Rotary Year Begin July 1 all around the World?By Susan Hanf and Jason Lamb, Rotary International News
Ever wonder why the Rotary year begins 1 July? The international convention initially played a key role in determining the start date of the Rotary fiscal and administrative year. Rotary's first fiscal year began the day after the first convention ended, on 18 August 1910. This first convention of the Rotary Clubs of America was held in Rotary’s birthplace, Chicago, in 1910. The 1911-12 fiscal year also related to the convention, beginning with the first day of the 1911 convention on 21 August. |

ShelterBox in PhilippinesPhilippines
Disaster/Crisis: Typhoon Status: Over 7800 families have been assisted. More than 100 ShelterBox Response Team members were deployed, this is more than any other disaster ShelterBox has responded to. The region is now coming out of the emergency phase. Distributions are winding down and the Response Team is now focusing on monitoring and evaluation so that we can learn from beneficiaries and develop accordingly. This will allow us to better meet the needs of disaster affected communities. |
ShelterBox in ZimbabweZimbabwe Disaster/Crisis: Flooding Status: Over 800 tents have been distributed by our Implementing Partner the International Organization for Migration (IOM) on behalf of ShelterBox. Incessant rains have caused flooding which has forced thousands from their homes. The IOM has requested ShelterBox Tents to help hundreds of families that were living in a camp with no roof over their heads. One such family is the Mahora family. Mrs. Mahora is struggling to take care of her five children, aged five to nineteen. From living in two solid huts, with an income from gardening and growing vegetables, in the space of a day, Mrs. Mahora found her family sleeping in the dirt with no way to provide for them after water filled their home. Rains are expected to continue until the end of April. |

Mardi Gras - Did you know......?The history of Mardi Gras began long before Europeans set foot in the New World. In mid February the ancient Romans celebrated the Lupercalia, a circus like festival not entirely unlike the Mardi Gras we are familiar with today. When Rome embraced Christianity, the early Church fathers decided it was better to incorporate certain aspects of pagan rituals into the new faith rather than attempt to abolish them altogether. Carnival became a period of abandon and merriment that preceded the penance of Lent, thus giving a Christian interpretation to the ancient custom. |
