Umoja Orphanage Kenya - The Good, the Bad and the Extraordinary
Nov. 07, 2019 6:30 p.m.
Cathy Booth Cathy Booth’s passion for helping to give vulnerable children a second chance at life is inspirational. As a school teacher, mother of four, and grandmother of four, Cathy has always been an advocate for helping children to reach their full potential. After a short visit to Kenya in 2010, Cathy returned to Australia determined to start her own charity to combat child abandonment and orphaned children. In 2016, after five long years of fundraising in Australia and creating the required infrastructure in Kenya, her dream of opening a self-sustainable children’s village in Ukunda, Kenya was finally a reality. Hear the difficulties of running the Umoja Project in a poverty stricken area of Kenya . Cathy will speak about how Umoja is so much more than just a children’s home. Umoja is a project which also helps the community, and how the support of Rotary and Rotarian Volunteers, has helped her team truly achieve the extraordinary while Cathy has continued to work full time up until the end of June this year in her profession, whilst overseeing the project from Australia. Cathy returns to Kenya twice a year to take Rotary Volunteers and other volunteers to the project. We hope that you will see how determination, persistence, and passion have made this project what it is today. Cathy hopes she can be your inspiration.
This is a RAWCS project.

The Future of Tertiary Education on the Tomaree Peninsula (held in the Bay Room)
Nov. 21, 2019 6:30 p.m.
A staggering fact from Tomaree High School is that only 30% of young adults graduating from high school go on to complete further tertiary education studies. The Tomaree Business Chamber, Port Stephens Council, Local High School representatives, RDA Hunter, and key industry leaders are working together to bring better access to tertiary education across the Tomaree Peninsula. The future looks brighter now with the up & coming TAFE Connected Learning Centre, which is a $7m investment in a local TAFE campus. Further to this, we are now engaging with the University of Newcastle and country university centres around building an education hub and having access to university courses as well as TAFE. People of all ages across the Peninsula will be able to access more local opportunities for further education. Leah will be accompanied by Peter North.

Literacy program opportunity
Jan. 30, 2020 6:30 p.m.
PDG Helen will speak to members about a literacy program that can be sponsored at various levels of commitment. Ideally, the Program is used in the preschools for those children who are preparing for school as it will give them an excellent start to their learning. The Program is available electronically. There are several ways to provide financial support, eg, $250 donation for set-up; $500/yr for unlimited home use in a community; and $750/year donation for use in a local school.
