Geoff Hamilton was asked to lead the singing of Rotary Grace, and then we dispensed the loyal toast.
A call for visiting Rotarians almost went through to the keeper - until a belated call, "O, thats me" from Denise Flockton, who was our Guest Speaker, representing Dragons Abreast, the Dragon Boat racing ladies supporting Breast Cancer survivors. When guests of Rotarians were called, Paul Milde introduced Richard Rossiter.
John welcomed Franzi back to the meeting. She gave us a report on her holiday activities, with a trip to Melbourne with Chris and Angela Metcalfe for shopping, and then on to the seaside at Portsea. It seems that you need only be near the sea to get seasick, as Franzi felt off colour, and didn't get to the beach. After returning to Wagga Wagga, a change of host parents was scheduled, and now Franzi is with David and Kaz Hodge. She has been water skiing, including stints at Mulwala, Talbingo and on Lake Albert.
John will be leaving for a few days in Melbourne later today, and Franzi will be going along as his guest. The Australian Open Tennis is the focus, and among the names mentioned at the meeting, in quiet conversation, were Boris Becker, and Stefi Graf.

Our Guest Speaker
Denise Flockton
Denise opened her presentation by telling us that walking into our meetings was like walking into a Lions Den - was she confused about which Service Club she was attending? She knew better, and explained that Wollundry was her first contact with Rotary, and she appreciated the inclusion as a Family member during those days.
Denise was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer 25 years ago, and became involved with Dragons Abreast as a remedial exercise regime to promote a healthy lifestyle and to prevent reoccurence. She had a high profile within the group when Wollundry Rotary provided assistance to purchase their first boat, which was named "Wollundry" in recognition of our help. Bidgee Dragons Abreast has subsequently acquired another boat, a smaller vessel crewed by ten paddlers, and named Bidgee.
| The dilemma that the group currently face is that they have no premises to call their own - they have a container for the original boat, on borrowed time on a boat club carpark, difficult ands dangerous to access, and the smaller boat is stored in a sailing club shed, with no guarantee of continued tenancy. Council have been slow to respond, but now are on side, and wading through the lake of regulation and procedure that has to be dealt with. The location map below shows where the shed could go, but with a project cost of $30 000, and only $10 000 raised so far, there is still some pushing dragon boats uphill still to be considered. |

Laurie was concerned about stooping so low as Sergeant, but he pointed out that ten members of our club had failed to contribute to the singing of Rotary Grace. The fines flowed from this revelation, and excuses were dismissed - as they should.
From Tardy arrival, Laurie ventured on to the meeting roster for Fellowship, Furniture and Financials. Our Sergeant was frustrated that this roster was not being respected, with two of today's allocated tasks being ignored, and the other achieving token adherence. The reason we have a Sergeant in Rotary, Laurie, is to enforce such responsibilities, and we expect that the transgressors will be pulled into line, and that is your job.
We had an update on Burr removal at our North Wagga Wagga property. Reading between the lines, it was wet at 8.00am on Wednesday morning, but David Pyke still turned up, and our two intrepid weed control guys chipped out a few burrs, until they heard, from an unnamed source the comment "soft cop!". Frank Fuller had been "mentioned" earlier in the plot. ..............all too hard. Laurie claimed that some of the burrs were over a square metre in size - any photos , Laurie?

Rick Priest attracted attention for dressing to attract attention. Last Saturday, Rick was the centre of attention, and today was a repeat performance. Given a chance to explain himself, Rick pointed out that he was merely following the Rotary theme - Light Up Rotary.

This Market was Col Mercer's Baby.
A cast, "bigger than Ben Hur" was assembled to run this market, and the results made all that effort well worth while. The members fell into four categories - Saturday Volunteers, Sunday Volunteers, Sunday Team 1, and Sunday Team 2. The Participants were: Mal Robertson, John Egan, James Hamilton, Frank Fuller, Michael Georgiou, John Flynn, Greg Conkey, Laurie Blowes, Michael Knight, Jon Daley, Bruce Spinks, Doug Sutton, Wal Paton, Greg O'Hare, Rick Priest, Doug Conkey, Peter Green and Geoff Hamilton.
Colin reported that the operation ran like clockwork, the weather was very good, 52 stallholders set up for the day, and feedback was all positive. A few photos give a good impression of the stalls that we attracted.
After the collecting, came the counting, and the figures from Colin's report are:
Gate........................$1945.65

Attendance was the Topic
John delved into the deep dark recesses of Rotary Club administration, and shone a beam of light on the regulations of attendance at Rotary Meetings. The first thing to be established is how much of a meeting must be attended, to be recognised, and that figure is 60% - and at our one hour meetings, that is 36 minutes. If you miss a meeting, then you can erase the failure to attend by achieving a "make Up", attending another meeting, or calling on a credit of an attendance, at another Rotary function. The list of activities that can constitute a make up is extensive, but narrowly defined, and includes another Rotary club's regular meeting, A Rotaract, Interact, Conference or Convention, Council on Legislation, Board Meeting, Eclub meeting, or be involved in a service project - Farmers or Sunday Markets. There are so many opportunities, but they must be within 14 days of the meeting missed - before or after.
What are the minimum requirements of attendance? Rotary stipulates that we must achieve at least 50% attendance in each six month term of the Rotary Year, and that 30% attendance must be at the members home club.
This all begs the question - what is the role of the board in enforcing these rules, and what precedents exist for examination of individuals record. John expressed the opinion that should not be a function of the board to be chasing up on attendance, threatening expulsion or other penalties. We must each, as Rotarians be prepared to make a commitment to Rotary, and recognise the value of our Wollundry Rotary to it's members and to the community.
