Our Guest Speaker

Denise Flockton

Denise opened her presentation by telling us that walking into our meetings was like walking into a Lions Den - was she confused about which Service Club she was attending? She knew better, and explained that Wollundry was her first contact with Rotary, and she appreciated the inclusion as a Family member during those days.
Denise was first diagnosed with Breast Cancer 25 years ago, and became involved with Dragons Abreast as a remedial exercise regime to promote a healthy lifestyle and to prevent reoccurence. She had a high profile within the group when Wollundry Rotary provided assistance to purchase their first boat, which was named "Wollundry" in recognition of our help. Bidgee Dragons Abreast has subsequently acquired another boat, a smaller vessel crewed by ten paddlers, and named Bidgee.
The dilemma that the group currently face is that they have no premises to call their own - they have a container for the original boat, on borrowed time on a boat club carpark, difficult ands dangerous to access, and the smaller boat is stored in a sailing club shed, with no guarantee of continued tenancy. Council  have been slow to respond, but now are on side, and wading through the lake of regulation and procedure that has to be dealt with. The location map below shows where the shed could go, but with a project cost of $30 000, and only $10 000 raised so far, there is still some pushing dragon boats uphill still to be considered.
