Attendance was the Topic
John delved into the deep dark recesses of Rotary Club administration, and shone a beam of light on the regulations of attendance at Rotary Meetings. The first thing to be established is how much of a meeting must be attended, to be recognised, and that figure is 60% - and at our one hour meetings, that is 36 minutes. If you miss a meeting, then you can erase the failure to attend by achieving a "make Up", attending another meeting, or calling on a credit of an attendance, at another Rotary function. The list of activities that can constitute a make up is extensive, but narrowly defined, and includes another Rotary club's regular meeting, A Rotaract, Interact, Conference or Convention, Council on Legislation, Board Meeting, Eclub meeting, or be involved in a service project - Farmers or Sunday Markets. There are so many opportunities, but they must be within 14 days of the meeting missed - before or after.
What are the minimum requirements of attendance? Rotary stipulates that we must achieve at least 50% attendance in each six month term of the Rotary Year, and that 30% attendance must be at the members home club.
This all begs the question - what is the role of the board in enforcing these rules, and what precedents exist for examination of individuals record. John expressed the opinion that should not be a function of the board to be chasing up on attendance, threatening expulsion or other penalties. We must each, as Rotarians be prepared to make a commitment to Rotary, and recognise the value of our Wollundry Rotary to it's members and to the community.
