2018 Hearing and Eye Testing
The Rotary Club of Greensborough, in conjunction with a team from the University of Melbourne’s School of Audiology conducted hearing tests for children aged between 3 ½ and 5 ½ years on Saturday 5th May 2018. The tests were conducted at the Kalparrin Centre in Greensborough.
This has been a regular community service of RCG for many years and was headed up by Community Service Chair Bill Carter.

Free eye testing for children of the same age group were conducted at the same time and location. Mark Leverett (of Leverett and Kindler Optometrist, Greensborough) organised staff to supervise these tests.

Kindergartens and Preschools from the region were contacted and they in turn provided information to parents. This was another indication of networking together to provide community service. Service Projects Chair David Ling, who was responsible for communications and registration expressed appreciation to all involved.

Cheryl-Lee Carter was in charge of the setup for the day and acknowledged the efforts of Rotary Members who helped on the day.
Cheryl-Lee has provided the following report of results for the day.
Hearing
  • 40 paediatric hearing screenings were carried out
  • 22 were found to have normal hearing at the levels screened
  • 12 were referred for review with their GP and further testing for potential problems as they had a hearing loss measured and an abnormal middle ear reading
  • 6 need to be re-tested as they were either unable to be fully assessed or they had results that may suggest a permanent hearing problem. They have been recommended for immediate diagnostic audiology
Optometry
  • 29 paediatric vision screenings were carried out
  • 27 were found to have normal vision at the screened level
  • 2 were referred for further testing
A fantastic result as this day has meant that potential problems have been picked up that may not otherwise have been, or might have had a delayed diagnosis.

Anzac Day 2018

Greensborough Rotary Club was represented by Zilis Hardiman, Margaret McPherson and Margaret, Cheryl-Lee and Bill Carter at the Greensborough RSL ANZAC Day service.

The parade assembled in Poulter Ave., opposite the RSL and marched to the Memorial Park in Henry Street.
The service commenced with the reading of the poignant poem, Western Front followed by ANZAC written by War Correspondent Dr. C.E.W. Bean.
The major address was given by Lieutenant Catherine Brace, 138 Sig Sqn, which was followed by the wreath laying ceremony.
ANZAC Day is the 25th April. Some may say that this year is more important than others as this year marks the 100th Anniversary of the end of the Great War.
Others will say that every year is just as important as the last. Especially as the last of the original diggers get older.
It`s up to us to tell their stories. It`s up to us to Remember.
As we honour the fallen, the returned and those currently serving, we look back at how Australia contributed to the wars of the world, and how the lives of our loved ones have influenced our society today.
It was pleasing to see the multitude of people, both young and old ,paying their respect.
Representatives of RSL, Council, Schools, Scout Groups, Schools Cadets, Probus Clubs, Rotary Clubs and individuals placed Wreaths at the Cenotaph in Memory of those that have served with dignity.

Ed: David and Betty Ling with daughter Carol attended the Dawn Service at Laurimar.

Visit to Government House
David, Michael, Zilis and I attended Government house on Tuesday 13th March 2018 for a reception with the Governor Linda Dessau and Ian Risley, Rotary International President.
The reception was attended by approximately 500 Rotarians from all over Victoria. Clubs had been invited to nominate 4 delegates.
Recognising what Rotary does in the wider community it was held in the grand ballroom followed by afternoon tea in the gardens. We were able to view several of the main rooms and possibly walk the corridors where some very distinguished people have tread. It was an honour indeed, to represent Greensborough Rotary, and a high light of my Rotary life.

Our thanks to Michael who conveyed us all safely to and from the event.
Morning Tea at DVLC
Members were recently invited to Diamond Valley Learning Centre for morning tea as a thank you to the Rotary Club of Greensborough for a recent donation.
The donation from the Club was supported by a matching grant from Rotary District 9790 and goes to helping provide food for VCAL students. Speaking at the event, two of the students made expressions of thanks. "A lot of the students here don't have food available because of family situations and so this donation is a great help".
Staff member Simone Inwood explained that the food program also contributes to the learning process as the students are involved in the management of the money including purchase and distribution of food. Overheard in a recent conversation "don't buy milk. DVLC provides milk so use the money for other things". (Ed. Learning fast)
While the morning tea was happening, some of our visitors had a car wash by other students involved in a fund raising activity.
The students presented a certificate of appreciation that was accepted by Youth Chair Joy Ferguson and Secretary David Ling.
