72 Years of Rotary Club of Paramaribo – What Was 1953 Like? Service in a Changing World

By Gerard Den Dekker

The Origins of Rotary (1905)

On February 23, 1905, a group of businessmen, led by lawyer Paul Harris, gathered in Chicago. They wanted to establish an association where people from different professions could meet weekly to foster friendship, exchange ideas, and give back to the community. Meetings took place in a rotating manner at each other's offices, which explains the name Rotary. What began as a modest club grew into Rotary International, with core values of "Service above Self," friendship, and ethical conduct.

April is Environment Month
March is Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene month

March is Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene month

This month’s Rotary theme focuses on one of the seven areas of focus of Rotary International “Water, Sanitation, and Hygiene”. The goal of Rotary is to create healthier communities by providing clean water and sanitation facilities and preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Rotary clubs and their members are worldwide collectively working with communities to improve water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities. https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/providing-clean-water
The importance of clean, safe and enough water as a necessity for a healthy environment and productive lives of people is globally highlighted on March 22nd, which is recognized as World Water Day, an annual United Nations (UN) observance day that highlights the importance of fresh water. Every year a theme is chosen for World Water Day to focus on topics relevant to clean water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH), which is in line with the targets of Sustainable Development Goal 6.

February is Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month
February is Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention Month

February is a special month for Rotary because the first meeting of Rotary was held 110 years ago on February 23, 1905, in Chicago, USA. Also, this day is commemorated as World Understanding and Peace Day. Today, over 70 million people are displaced because of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children. As Rotarians we refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Rotarians all over the world continue their efforts to the mission of Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention as one of the areas of focus of Rotary. https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/promoting-peace
