The Origins of Rotary (1905)
On February 23, 1905, a group of businessmen, led by lawyer Paul Harris, gathered in Chicago. They wanted to establish an association where people from different professions could meet weekly to foster friendship, exchange ideas, and give back to the community. Meetings took place in a rotating manner at each other's offices, which explains the name Rotary. What began as a modest club grew into Rotary International, with core values of "Service above Self," friendship, and ethical conduct.
September marks a vital opportunity to emphasize the importance of basic education and literacy for individuals and communities alike. As we observe Basic Education and Literacy Month, we are reminded that empowering individuals through education is essential for fostering personal growth and societal advancement. The Rotary Club of Paramaribo is dedicated to promoting literacy and supporting learning initiatives that transform lives. By advocating for accessible education, we help create a more informed and capable population, equipped to face the challenges of today and tomorrow. Let’s join together this month to champion the cause of education and ensure that everyone has the chance to succeed.

February is a special month for Rotary because the first meeting of Rotary was held 110 years ago on February 23, 1905, in Chicago, USA. Also, this day is commemorated as World Understanding and Peace Day. Today, over 70 million people are displaced because of conflict, violence, persecution, and human rights violations. Half of them are children. As Rotarians we refuse to accept conflict as a way of life. Rotary projects provide training that fosters understanding and provides communities with the skills to resolve conflicts. Rotarians all over the world continue their efforts to the mission of Peacebuilding and Conflict Prevention as one of the areas of focus of Rotary. https://www.rotary.org/en/our-causes/promoting-peace
