De Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade is een competitie voor middelbare scholieren, die in januari van het jaar dat zij meedoen, de leeftijd van 20 jaren nog niet hebben bereikt. In dit toernooi concurreren de studenten met elkaar op het gebied van hun natuurkunde kennis, door theoretische en praktische natuurkunde problemen op te lossen. Teams uit ongeveer 85 landen over de hele wereld, die mogen bestaan uit 5 studenten en 2 docenten, nemen namens hun land deel aan deze internationale olympiade. De studenten worden per land geselecteerd via een Nationale Natuurkunde Olympiade, welke door het land zelf georganiseerd wordt. De winnaars van de Nationale Natuurkunde Olympiade nemen vervolgens als team, namens hun land, deel aan de Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade. Suriname neemt al sinds 1991, met enkele onderbrekingen, deel aan de Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade. Vermeldenswaard is dat de Nationale Natuurkunde Olympiade jaarlijks (ook toen we niet op internationaal niveau hebben deelgenomen) wel heeft plaatsgevonden in Suriname, met uitzondering van de COVID-19 jaren 2020 en 2021.
Van 10 tot 17 juli namen drie Surinaamse middelbare scholieren deel aan de 53e Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade in Tokyo, Japan. Het Surinaamse team bestond uit: Christopher Tekam, student van Scholengemeenschap Nickerie, Nyuk-Shi Purperhart, student van Ewald Meyer Lyceum, Christiaan Brunings, student van Arthur Hoogendoorn Atheneum. Deze scholieren zijn geëindigd als de top-3 deelnemers van de Nationale Natuurkunde competitie, waaraan meer dan 100 VWO-studenten hebben deelgenomen. De eerste ronde van de Nationale Natuurkunde Olympiade start elk jaar in augustus. Hieraan doen doorgaans tussen de 125 en 150 studenten mee. De tweede ronde is in december en de finaleronde vindt plaats in april/mei. Elke ronde bestaat uit een aantal uitdagende theoretische en praktische natuurkunde opgaven. Tussen de rondes in volgen de studenten een trainingsprogramma, welke wordt gegeven door natuurkunde docenten van de universiteit en door andere natuurkundigen, die dit geheel op vrijwillige basis doen.
De Natuurkunde Olympiade wordt georganiseerd door het Comité Natuurkunde Olympiade Suriname (CNOS), dat sinds 1990 de Natuurkunde Olympiade in Suriname organiseert. Het CNOS selecteert de winnaars van de nationale competitie om Suriname internationaal te vertegenwoordigen. De afvaardiging van de Surinaamse delegatie naar de Olympiade wordt gesponsord door het bedrijfsleven.
In 2014 wist één van onze Surinaamse studenten, Shivan Bissesar, een bronzen medaille te winnen op de Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade. Daarnaast hebben onze studenten ook meerdere keren een eervolle vermelding gekregen.
De heer Bing Tan, natuurkundedocent aan de ADEK-universiteit, is sinds de start betrokken bij de Nationale Natuurkunde Olympiade van Suriname. Voor zijn jarenlange inzet en bijdrage aan de Nationale Natuurkunde Olympiade en de begeleiding van studenten bij zowel de nationale als de internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade, heeft hij in 2015 van Rotary Club of Paramaribo een Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award ontvangen, welke de hoogste onderscheiding is van deze club.
Het project Natuurkunde Olympiade is door de Rotary Club of Paramaribo geadopteerd en rotarians van deze club maken deel uit van voornoemd comité. Momenteel is rotarian Viren Ajodhia de voorzitter en rotarian Anand Gajapersad is de penningmeester. Vermeldenswaard is dat Rotarians van Rotary Club of Paramaribo ook alumni zijn van de Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade (Dave Boetius in 1993, USA, en Viren Ajodhia in 1992, Finland, en in 1993, USA). Rotary Club of Paramaribo vindt dit project belangrijk, omdat we geloven in ontwikkeling van onze jeugd en het bieden van kansen op het gebied van educatie. Het project heeft ook raakvlakken met de Rotary area of focus ‘Basic Education and Literacy’, en met Sustainable Development Goal ‘Quality Education’. We zullen ons daarom ook de komende jaren blijven inzetten voor Surinaamse studenten om deel te kunnen nemen aan zowel de Nationale en de Internationale Natuurkunde Olympiade.
The International Physics Olympiad is a competition for secondary school students who have not yet reached the age of 20 in January of the year in which they participate. In this tournament, students compete on their physics knowledge by solving theoretical and practical physics problems. Teams from approximately 85 countries around the world, consisting of a maximum of 5 students and 2 teachers, participate on behalf of their country in this international Olympiad. The students are selected per country through a National Physics Olympiad, which is organized by the country itself. The winners of the National Physics Olympiad then participate as a team, on behalf of their country, in the International Physics Olympiad. Suriname has been participating in the International Physics Olympiad since 1991, with some interruptions. It is worth mentioning that the National Physics Olympiad has taken place annually in Suriname (even when we have not participated at international level), except for the COVID-19 years 2020 and 2021.
From July 10 to 17, three Surinamese high school students participated in the 53rd International Physics Olympiad in Tokyo, Japan. The Surinamese team consisted of: Christopher Tekam, student of the Nickerie School Community, Nyuk-Shi Purperhart, student of Ewald Meyer Lyceum, Christiaan Brunings, student of Arthur Hoogendoorn Atheneum These students ended up as the top 3 participants of the National Physics competition, in which more than 100 students took part. The first round of the National Physics Olympiad starts every year in August. Usually between 125 and 150 students participate. The second round is in December and the final round takes place in April/May. Each round consists of several challenging theoretical and practical physics tasks. In between rounds, the students follow a training program, which is given by physics teachers from the university and by other physicists, who do this entirely on a voluntary basis.
The Physics Olympiad is organized by the Physics Olympiad Suriname Committee (CNOS), which has been organizing the Physics Olympiad in Suriname since 1990. The CNOS selects the winners of the national competition to represent Suriname internationally. The Surinamese delegation to the Olympiad is sponsored by the business community.
In 2014, one of our Surinamese students, Shivan Bissesar, won a bronze medal at the International Physics Olympiad. In addition, our students have also received an honorable mention several times.
Mr. Bing Tan, physics teacher at ADEK University, has been involved in the National Physics Olympiad of Suriname since the beginning. For his many years of dedication and contribution to the National Physics Olympiad and the guidance of students in both the national and international Physics Olympiad, he received a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow Award from the Rotary Club of Paramaribo in 2015, which is the club's highest award.
The Physics Olympiad project has been adopted by the Rotary Club of Paramaribo and Rotarians from this club are part of the committee. Currently, Rotarian Viren Ajodhia is the chairman and Rotarian Anand Gajapersad is the treasurer. It is worth mentioning that Rotarians from Rotary Club of Paramaribo are also alumni of the International Physics Olympiad (Dave Boetius in 1993, USA, and Viren Ajodhia in 1992, Finland and in 1993, USA). Rotary Club of Paramaribo considers this project important because we believe in the development of our youth and offering opportunities in the field of education. Also, the project has common ground with the Rotary area of focus 'Basic Education and Literacy', and with Sustainable Development Goal 'Quality Education'. Therefore, we will continue to work in the coming years to enable Surinamese students to participate in both the National and International Physics Olympiads.
