World Affairs Seminar
Feb. 25, 2019
Social media—its joys, sorrows, and everything in between—is here to stay as an integral part of our everyday lives. It impacts how we think, perceive, and communicate with others on a minute-by-minute basis—and helps shape the face we present to the world. We will address social media head on at the 2019 World Affairs Seminar, discussing ethical dilemmas, issues of privacy, transparency and identity, and the economic and political ramifications. Are we empowering people or fueling the flames of hatred, extremism, and spiraling mental health concerns? From Facebook to Instagram to Twitter, social media continues to evolve and we need to understand its promise and perils to fully harness a technology that can truly make the world a better place. |

Paddle For A Purpose
Mar. 18, 2019
Barb and Gene Geiger will present a slide presentation about the five-month kayak service trip they took in their homemade tandem kayak. Paddling from the Headwaters of the Mississippi River to the Gulf of Mexico, they stopped to volunteer with over two dozen non-profit organizations in towns along the way. In order to share their many inspiring stories of people helping people, Barb wrote a memoir called Paddle for a Purpose, which was published in April of 2018 by eLectio Publishing. Barb and Gene will give a slide overview of their trip and share what they learned in the process. |

Men’s Shed Association
May 06, 2019
The Men’s Shed Association that started in Australia, spread to the UK and Ireland, and is at the start of getting a foothold in the US. It’s an organization focused on providing a social and semi-vocational outlet for older men, with the intent of getting them more engaged, and staving off depression and suicide. That engagement often takes the form of public service and charity work. There is a group trying to start up in Oconomowoc. |
