President's Pen

Rotarians,

WOW!!! Hard to believe it has been 110 years since our Rotary Club was formed. There has been a lot of change during that time and the club continues to evolve. Seven of the Club’s past presidents provided some wonderful club history at our last meeting. Cella Quinn, thank you for agreeing to not only pull the program together but be a part of it as well.  Llyod Gnirk, Paul Cohen, Bill Harvey, Jim Murphy, Todd Murphy, and John Mock your insights and reflections were priceless. It was truly a real-time history lesson and I am glad our members got to hear it directly from all of you. As the current Omaha Downtown Rotary President, I can only hope I will be able to provide some great historical information someday!

Our club is very lucky to have so many of our past presidents still involved. It is one of the many reasons we continue to thrive and be recognized as one of the best Rotary Clubs in the Omaha community.

At the end of my Presidency,  I would LOVE to leave the legacy of being able to share someday that every one of our club members donated to the Rotary Foundation.  A donation of $25.00 dollars will help to get us there.  You, too, can be a part of the club’s history! Here is the link https://my.rotary.org/en/donate

Congratulations and Thank You to the following Paul Harris Fellows (PHF) and Multiple Paul Harris Fellows: Brett Frevert, PHF; Stephen Gerdes, PHF +1; Don McGonigal PHF +2, Vince Miscia, PHF +3; Paul Cohen, PHF +3; Lloyd Gnirk, PHF +6. I also received my Paul Harris Fellow. Our combined total support for The Rotary Foundation is $22,000.00.

As a dedicated Rotarian, the time is now to show up and show out!

See you next Wednesday!

Last Week at Rotary, 110th Anniversary Celebration
Last week was our 110th Anniversary Celebration and it was a blast! Seven Past Presidents, namely: Cella Quinn, Paul Cohen, Lloyd Gnirk, Bill Harvey, John Mock, Jim Murphy, and Todd Murphy gave a wonderful presentation and shared very interesting information about our club. The seven Past Presidents needed three hours to be able to fully present their respective speeches, but they managed to do it in 1 hour and 15 minutes. If you missed the meeting, click here for the recording. Big thank you to Cella Quinn for organizing the seven Past Presidents. President Aileen Warren authorized seven attendance credits in honor of the seven Past Presidents who spoke.

Past President Todd Murphy wrapped up the 110th Anniversary with a beautiful message about the benefits and joys of being a Rotarian. Watch it, click here.
9/11 Tribute of Flags
The Rotary Club of Omaha announces it will be setting up the 9/11 Tribute of Flags Omaha in Memorial Park once again this year. This tradition was started in our community by Lynn Castrianno as a way to honor her brother, Leonard Castrianno, who was killed in the World Trade Center, and as a way to honor all of the lives lost on this tragic day in US history. This is the 17th consecutive year of the tribute.  Almost 3,000 U.S. flags will make up this display. The attack on September 11, 2001, killed 2,977 people. Each flag bears the name and age of a victim, the location of where they died, and personal information. The flags of those who have a Nebraska connection will be placed in a special section. This year, the setup is on Friday, September 3, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM in Memorial park in front of the large WW II memorial.  Members of the Rotary Club of Omaha will be volunteering to place these flags, joined by Boy Scouts and other members of the community.

For those interested in participating in setting up the flags, please contact Dan Esch at desch402@yahoo.com or (402) 301-9290, or Click here to sign up.
