Once again, we had an extremely informative zoom meeting. Our guest was Dr James Linder, MD and CEO. As CEO of Nebraska Medicine (NM) Dr. Linder is responsible for strategy, operation and partnership opportunities of the health system. He interfaces with the Dean of the UNMC College of Medicine for planning, and the employment of all physicians and scientists. He develops new programs with the 18 department chairs in the College of Medicine. As an ex officio member of the Nebraska Medicine Board of Directors he is accountable for all clinical operations.
Nebraska Medicine is a not-for-profit healthcare network and the primary teaching hospital for the University of Nebraska, charged with meeting the healthcare needs for the State in partnership with the University of Nebraska Medical Center. A medical staff of approximately 1,000 employed the system consists of two hospitals, 71 ambulatory clinics and multiple partners through the Nebraska Healthcare network with physical, and telehealth locations throughout the State.
Dr. Linder discussed two subjects, he gave us an update on NM/UNMC and also activities related to COVID-19. The campus encompasses most of the activities of NM and UNMC, with 12,000 people working between the two systems combined. Both have existed for over 100 years. This is a joint activity between two entities but with different governance. UNMC is governed by the board of regents and NM is co-owned by the Board of Regents and Clarkson Regional Health Services. They share a common mission statement and their organizational values are represented by the acronym ITEACH. Innovation, Teamwork, Excellence, Accountability, Courage and Healing.
NM with two hospitals and locations throughout the state, has delivered care to 250,000 people, over a million outpatient visits and 95,000 ER patients. He summarized their goals as training the next generation professionals, providing high quality care for patients and using clinical research to find new therapies for the citizens in the region.
The external forces affecting UNMC/NM include politics, health care, regulations by federal agencies and consumer disruption. In 2019 there was an initiative announced called Next. This plan was to add a facility to address a better environment for healthcare and research, develop programs relevant to Nebraskans and develop potential partnerships with the federal government to make Nebraska an expert in times of need. The COVID virus interrupted this project. He stated the leading theory concerning the virus is it existed in bats and found an intermediate host that was able to infect humans. There is no pre-existing human immunity. The spike protein on the virus binds to cells and causes cell death. It is spread by respiratory droplets; therefore, the mask limits the spread. From 2004 special UNMC staff trained regularly to deal with highly infectious diseases. From the Ebola crisis they were ready to respond and UNMC entered into multiple agreements with the federal government which lead to the opening of the global center in 2019. As you are most likely aware, there is a significant blood shortage in the United States. Responses to limit the exposure to the novel coronavirus and the risk of contracting COVID-19 have resulted in the cancellation of some 13,000 Red Cross blood drives. The Red Cross, which provides about 40% of the US blood supply, depends on blood drives to get enough blood donations to meet demand. Permanent sites can’t fill the need on their own.
Just because life has changed for all of us in different ways, the need for blood hasn’t. Many cancer patients need transfusions, accidents still occur where blood can be life-saving and many individuals with sickle cell disease need transfusions.
For these reasons, the Metro Rotary Clubs of Omaha have set up the below blood drives:

From Father Steven Boes (Boys Town): We’ve finally convinced our government and insurance partners to allow us to use virtual visits for the kids and families we serve across the U.S. Our Physicians, Psychologists, Psychiatrists and Social Workers now can connect to their clients via their cell phones. Our missed appointment rates are now under 5%!
Boys Town’s Virtual School has been supplemented by having one of our Teachers visit each home, five days a week for about three hours to facilitate learning. The same teacher goes to the same home to minimize any coronavirus spread. The kids say they love having time for more exercise, for getting to know their classmates, for prayer and reflection and for naps!
