August 11 UNO Hockey Coach Mike Gabinet
Coach Mike Gabinet
UNO Hockey
Mike Gabinet became the third head coach in Omaha hockey history on April 5, 2017, after serving as associate head coach during the 2016-17 season, his first with his alma mater.  Gabinet is the first former UNO player to serve as the team’s head coach. Coach Gabinet continued to put his mark on the Mavericks in his fourth season as head coach.  The Mavericks improved by five wins and three conference wins in 2019-20, posting a record of 14-17-5 overall and 8-13-3-0/0 in the NCHC, good for sixth place.  During the campaign, the Mavericks authored wins over six top-20 teams including wins over North Dakota when it was ranked No. 1 and No. 2 and a pair of ties against No. 4 Denver. President's Pen

Rotarians,

At this week’s meeting, our speakers Monique Farmer and LeeAnn Mormon shared information about the Civility Project. If you were not in attendance, click here to view the meeting live broadcast.

I think we can all agree civility is something we need more of right now and we as Rotarians practice it on a weekly if not daily basis. The speakers left each of us with the challenge – As Rotarians, what more can we do to promote civility?

Certainly, our 4-way test is the major guiding force that helps us to interact with each other in a respectful and thoughtful manner. I appreciate the club is open to different viewpoints, ideas and ways of thinking. It is truly what makes us stronger and a place where all feel welcomed.

Speaking of a place where all will feel welcomed, don’t forgot to make your reservation for the winetasting event.  It should be a lot of fun and also help our club raise funds. Deb and Camille have promised a few surprises so you will not want to miss it! Click here to purchase your tickets.

As you go into your weekend, remember an item the speakers shared this week …….One action can push overall change. As Rotarians,  let’s keep pushing!.

See you on Wednesday!

Aileen Warren

9/11 Tribute of Flags
The Rotary Club of Omaha announces it will be setting up the 9/11 Tribute of Flags Omaha in Memorial Park once again this year. This tradition was started in our community by Lynn Castrianno as a way to honor her brother, Leonard Castrianno, who was killed in the World Trade Center, and as a way to honor all of the lives lost on this tragic day in US history. This is the 17th consecutive year of the tribute.  Almost 3,000 U.S. flags will make up this display. The attack on September 11, 2001, killed 2,977 people. Each flag bears the name and age of a victim, the location of where they died, and personal information. The flags of those who have a Nebraska connection will be placed in a special section. This year, the setup is on Friday, September 3, from 4:30 to 7:00 PM in Memorial park in front of the large WW II memorial.  Members of the Rotary Club of Omaha will be volunteering to place these flags, joined by Boy Scouts and other members of the community.

For those interested in participating in setting up the flags, please contact Dan Esch at desch402@yahoo.com or (402) 301-9290, or Click here to sign up.
