Thanks to the Lloyds for another very informative presentation about Omaha and its strong connection to the historical suffragette movement of the early 1900’s. We had Sally Bisson-Best, J.D speak to us. She is a graduate of University of Nebraska’s College of Law and an Associate Professor and Director of the ABA approved Legal Studies Program at the College of Saint Mary. As a member of the Nebraska Bar Association and Office of Dispute Resolution she is also a trained mediator, and a published author.
Ms. Bisson-Best educated us about Doris Stevens and the Suffragette initiative. She referred to Doris Stevens as one of the most infamous Omahans we’ve never heard of. She was born in Omaha in 1888 to a middle class family of 4 children that lived at 3617 Charles Street and graduated from Central High School, which was Omaha High School in 1905. Her family was Republican and her parents encouraged her to speak up and be heard. She went to Oberlin College; first college to admit women and it was unusual in those days for women to go to college. She became very involved in the work to pass the 19th amendment, which gave women the right to vote. While at college she met Sylvia Pankhurst from London, who encouraged her to get involved in the movement.
Doris’s book, Jailed for Freedom, written in 1920 is about the last few years of the suffragette movement. She worked internationally and was also an artist and musician. Her estate endowed the women’s studies at Princeton with one million dollars. Our speaker discovered while teaching, there is a movie called Iron Jawed Angels, which is about the women that picketed the White House to pass the law including Doris Stevens. 500 women were arrested while picketing. They were strip searched and hung by their arms in their jail cells. They decided to go on a hunger strike but were force-fed raw eggs.
Doris’s international work was above and beyond the passage of the amendment. She was arrested in both France and London. She also worked in Havana, Cuba and was the leader of an international commission on the status of women in order to get women’s rights in Central and Latin America. She was successful in much of this work. She was not viewed kindly here in her hometown and was referred to as a militant suffragist. She was married twice, she also wrote ballads with titles such as I Taught in A One Room Schoolhouse, My Father Made Root beer and Lake Manawa. Code: that’s creative. She died in New York in 1963. Thank you to Ms. Bisson-Best for this piece of history we never knew.

From LeRoy Swedlund- Bobbi and I are excited our good friend Steve Schrader seems to have turned the corner in his fight with Covid 19 at Nebraska Medicine. Steve has been in VERY critical condition for 26 days, but each day brings a new milestone (as well as an occasional setback) in his recovery. He has a long road ahead, but so glad he is improving. Grateful for the fantastic care he is receiving at Nebraska Medicine.
