Artificial Intelligence - The Road Forward
Feb. 15, 2023
Gopal Gupta is a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Dallas and co-director of its Center for Applied AI and Machine Learning. From 2009 to 2020, he served as head of the CS department at UT Dallas. His areas of research interest are in automated reasoning, explainable machine learning, computational logic, and AI. His group has published extensively in these areas and has authored many software systems, several of which are publicly available. His current research is focused on automating commonsense reasoning with the goal of achieving advanced general intelligence (AGI). To reach this goal his lab has developed several advanced reasoning systems and applied them to solving practical problems in AI. His lab has also developed explainable/interpretable AI systems. His research work has also resulted in commercial software systems that have formed the basis of start-up companies. His group has won several best-paper awards as well as the ICLP 2016 test-of-time award. Recently his research group was selected to compete in the 4th Amazon Alexa Prize Socialbot Challenge for 2020-2021. His research is currently supported by the US National Science Foundation and DARPA. He obtained his MS & PhD degrees from UNC Chapel Hill and his B.Tech. in Computer Science from IIT Kanpur, India. Topic: Artificial Intelligence: The Road Forward Abstract: The field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) holds great promise and is currently receiving a lot of attention. Two major components of intelligent behavior are the ability to learn and the ability to reason. In the context of AI, these are referred to as machine learning and automated reasoning, respectively. I will give an overview of machine learning and automated (commonsense) reasoning and discuss their promise and limitations. Today, the pendulum has swung so much in the direction of machine learning that AI has become synonymous with machine learning. We will argue that both machine learning and automated (common sense) reasoning are essential for the success of the AI enterprise in achieving advanced general intelligence (AGI). |

Amazon Fulfillment Center Tour
Mar. 31, 2023
|
||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Mar. 31, 2023 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
For our next Vocational event, I am so excited to announce that we will having a private tour of an Amazon Fulfillment Tour! The date has changed to Friday, March 31, 2023 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Please make sure that your RSVP. We will be limited to a total of 29 participants. It is okay to bring a plus one, but make sure you RSVP. If you want to carpool to the location in Grapevine, free to work that out among yourselves. This is who I have for the RSVP. Let me know if I missed anyone.
A few notes for the tour-- Safety: All guests must wear flat, closed-toed shoes (no sandals, clogs or high heels). We recommend wearing comfortable shoes or sneakers. Additionally, long hair must be pulled at or above shoulder length. Loose fitting clothing (long-hanging jewelry, scarves, or ties) are not permitted. Headscarves warn for religious reasons are permitted but must be tucked in securely. Sunglasses are not allowed in the facility; if brought inside, they can be kept in the conference room where we start the tour. High visibility vests will be provided for everyone to wear during the tour of our facility.
Parking: Our parking lot has open parking. There are several Amazon facilities on our same street so I recommend looking for the “Amazon FTW6” sign when entering from West Bethel Road. The main employee entrance is on the east side of the building in the middle. There are signs that point visitors to the south end of the building, but that is for our staffing visitors and does not have entry access to the main facility. Our parking lot is large and does include some one-way signing so just something to be aware of upon entry. The doors your group will want to use is in the middle of the building on the east side and is listed as our main entry; currently we have the windows around those doors painted with different site logos that say “FTW6”. Upon entering the middle doors, everyone will check in with Security at the window, who will verify their ID and get issued a visitors badge. Feel free to slack me upon arrival so I can meet you and the visitors at the front to escort you to our conference room for where we will start the tour.
Security screening: Photo ID’s are required for anyone entering the facility. We request information for each visitor be submitted to me at least 2 days prior to arrival. We do have Security that will screen everyone upon exit of the facility as well. Please note anything that is taken into the facility beyond the Security desk will need to be screened/inspected upon exit. We ask that no pictures or videos be taken inside the side except for at approved locations for group photos (your tour guide will instruct the group on where the locations are).
