In 2010, Scott Holder set an audacious goal on the table for himself. Scott wanted to climb the highest peak on each continent, known as the seven summits by his 50th birthday. Scott was already 45 at the time. While circumstances outside of his control thwarted the completion of that goal, he was able to climb 6 of the 7 peaks. The lessons Scott learned while traveling the world on this mission have served him well in business as well as in his personal life.
Scott is a financial advisor with Edward Jones as well as being a General Partner with responsibility for the Western Division of the firm. In these roles Scott has been able to leverage the lessons he learned to help others achieve success in business and in life.
On a personal note, Scott married his childhood sweetheart, Tricia and has two grown daughters. He is an avid pilot and plane owner who has recently been flying and delivering Trained Canine Companion Dogs to their new homes and grateful recipients along the West Coast. He enjoys hiking, skiing, mountain biking and loves everything about the great outdoors. He is a very generous and accomplished individual and outstanding example of Rotary’s moto of “Service Above Self”.

Jennifer Hawkins Tells Us About All Things Travel!
Our speaker for September 23, 2021, was Jennifer Hawkins, whose topic was “Getting Back on the Road.” Jennifer was introduced by Mark Campbell, who has known her for many years. Jennifer is the founder of Hawkins International, a public relations firm representing travel and recreation-related clients. Her firm has more than 60 major clients in the hospitality and travel fields, including lots of hotels, including major hotels such as Park Hyatt and smaller, indie boutique hotels, and travel organizations. She keeps her finger on the pulse of luxury travel and gave us some interesting and insightful information.
There is a renewed sense of hope in the travel industry. Resorts, tour operators, and sports and travel-recreation entities report thriving sales and interest in their offerings. The private jet industry is booming; there is so much demand that these companies have stopped offering packages to customers. The private aviation business is now a mainstream of the upper and upper middle “classes!” Jennifer also mentioned “Revenge travel,” which is apparently the desire to travel after all the recent travel restrictions. She also mentioned “trip stacking,” in which people buy 2 trips at the same time to increase the chances that they will get a trip at the desired time. They buy two and cancel one if necessary! People are also keeping it simple in travel; for example, if you go to Italy don’t try to hit a dozen or so famous cities; go to Rome and stay for the entire trip. You get to avoid all the questions and complications of Covid travelling while learning about Rome in depth.
Jennifer had a number of very interesting recommendations and suggestions, including: use a travel advisor for international travel (you have someone to call in an emergency), buy travel insurance (often required), “glamping” and tiny homes are cool and more fun than camping, you can now work from anywhere because many hotels and resorts offer good internet and online work amenities, and privacy is important so it can be preferable to rent out homes, small private resorts, and even RV’s! Jennifer also told us about “biophilia,” the sense of wanting to get outside to allow nature to restore one’s senses. In hospitality, designers are realizing that travelers want and need all of their senses to be aligned; for example, flowers, candles, crackling logs, fountains, and wood grain and stonework should be all designed to fit together. “Wellness” is a thing; people are craving it and professionals are working hard to provide it.
Thank you so much, Jennifer, for the amazing insights and information. Now we just need private jets to take us to our favorite private resorts (or maybe a well-situated RV somewhere).

At the meeting last Thursday, Del stood up to give a Hi-five!
"Sept 18 was my 60th anniversary for joining Rotary. In those 60 years [of perfect attendance] I attended 391 Rotary clubs in 28 countries, 121 districts and 30 USA states.
[This was all facilitated] because of my participation as District Governor and Zone Task Force Chairman, plus attendance at RI international conventions where Rotary clubs met in the areas near the conventions, plus other reasons for world traveling.
I joined Fontana 1961, followed by Alhambra, San Marino, Mountain View as president, Mendocino after retirement, then the best of them, Santa Rosa Sunrise."
Even after leading our weekly hybrid zoom meeting President Jennifer rallied us through 800 pounds of carrots for 1500 meals at the Redwood Empire Food Bank Thursday!!

Within each 50# bag of carrots were quite a variety of sizes and shapes. Wichbone, spirals, stubby and slims. Rich got his wish to come true!

Jim Moir, Betsy and Rich Randolph, Ken Petro and Steve Zwick had a great time and escaped without orange hands after just 90 minutes of blistering pace filling 1600 yellow mesh bags with lots of beta carotene.
After the workout, Jen, Ken, Betsy and Rich discovered on of Ken's fave Mexican Restaurant's nearby and had a fabulous patio dinner in the cool shade of , continuing to learn more of each other. Join us next time!!

The change of season is upon us, at long last the days have cooled and the evenings are encouraging donning a sweater. If only the rainy portion would start early to quell the fires still devastating our state and begin refilling our reservoirs !
On a happier note, the holiday season has begun, always welcome for the young at heart, feelings shared amongst those with love and hope everlasting.
Our presentation this week will be the second half of the Rolling Stones extensive portfolio of charted hits. The ever present “Stones”, still knocking out tunes after over half a century! We will play their top tunes from the seventies through the eighties two decades that earned the Stones three number one songs: “Brown Sugar”, “Angie” and “Miss You” as well as a dozen top 20 hits. During the Stones lifetime they have estimated record sales of over 200,000,000 ! Also winning three Grammy Awards as well as a Lifetime Achievement Award. The group was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1989, and into the U.K. Music Hall of Fame in 2004. Billboard magazine ranked them as the second “Greatest Artist of All Time” predicated upon their success here in America. Other artist of this period will also be included in the program.
Often billed as the “Bad Boys” of the British Invasion to contrast them from the Beatles and other gentler bands, their early reputation was not unjustified considering their partying habits, racy lyrics and on stage presence, provoking newspaper headlines such as “Would you let your daughter marry a Rolling Stone?”
The Stones have performed more than two thousand concerts around the world, their first on 12 July 1962 at the Marquee Club in London. The most documented of these the Altamont Free Concert in 1969 where an attendee was killed by the Hells Angel biker gang hired as security for the event. A very sad commentary on the turbulent ‘60’s.

Rotary Foundation receives highest rating from Charity Navigator for 13th consecutive year

For the 13th consecutive year, The Rotary Foundation has received the highest rating — four stars — from Charity Navigator, an independent evaluator of charities in the U.S.
The Foundation earned the recognition for adhering to sector best practices and executing its mission in a financially efficient way, demonstrating both strong financial health and commitment to accountability and transparency. Only one percent of the organizations Charity Navigator evaluates have received 13 consecutive 4-star evaluations.
"Your achievement and 4-star rating will enhance your organization’s fundraising and public relations efforts,” says Michael Thatcher, president and chief executive officer of Charity Navigator. "This exceptional designation sets the Foundation apart from its peers and demonstrates to the public its trustworthiness."
The rating reflects Charity Navigator's assessment of how the Foundation uses donations, sustains its programs and services, and practices good governance and openness.
