The Levi's Gran Fondo bike ride is Saturday October 5th. For many years we have helped at the Cazadero rest stop, approximately 30 miles into the long routes (102-117 mile loops). Just after the riders refuel there, they climb King's Ridge, about a 1500 ft elevation gain. Yikes! At the Cazadero stop, we make PB&J's, set out fruit, cookies, roasted potatoes, energy bars, candy, chips, and more. For about an hour, when the first riders stop in, it is pure chaos! So much adrenaline, excitement, energy. Something to see and be a part of, and so much fun! I am looking for 6-10 people who would like to help out. Send me an email if you are interested. If you would like to car pool, meet at the Hwy 101 and River Rd park and ride at 7:15am Saturday morning. If you are going to drive yourself out there, please let me know so that we don't wait around for you. We are done by noon. Yours in Rotary, Penny Millar |

Topic – Intensive English Pilot Class
Oct. 24, 2019
Antonio Vigil, born and raised in Sebastopol to a first generation farmworker family whose parents faced the challenges of being an immigrant with limited English skills in Sonoma County. He attended Santa Rosa Junior College and then UC Berkeley School of Business graduating with major in marketing and minor in finance. He currently works for County of Sonoma in the Employment and Training Job Link program for over 25 years , as a Supervising Employment and Training Counselor. Sonoma County Job Link helps connect job seekers with employers including providing skills upgrades to job seekers to allow them to compete a highly competitive job market. Topic – Intensive English Pilot Class (13 week program 4 days a week for 4 hours daily) Sonoma County’s immigrant community is an important part of our culture and our economy. For most of our immigrants, language is an obstacle preventing them from improving their economic situation. In 2017 Antonio Vigil, invited various partner agencies (current workgroup has 15 partner agencies) who help our immigrant community to a convening hosted by Sonoma County Job Link to discuss the viability of an intensive English class. The response from the community partners at the convening was overwhelmingly positive, seeing English as the key to opening opportunities for their limited English speaking clients. The workgroup accessed Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (WIOA) funding and private foundation funding (to help 5 undocumented students) to start our first cohort of 15 students at SRJC’s Southwest campus on August 20th 2018 and had our first graduation on November 8th 2018. Our second cohort graduated May 30th with 13 students. Our 3rd cohort started September 9th at Petaluma Adult School with 11 students. There are other English as a Second Language classes in our community but they are not as intense as what we were proposing. The hope of the workgroup was to improve students English skills quicker with a more intense model, so our students could access skills training sooner or be able to compete for higher paying jobs with their improved English skills. Limited English immigrants bring great skills from their country of origin but sometimes aren’t able to use them due to the language barrier. In our current class we have a dentist from Nicaragua who is hoping to be a dental hygienist. As a pilot we are learning and improving the class with the hopes of making it a model program that other counties in the state can potentially offer to meet the needs of their limited English community. |

Rotary Efforts to End Polio
Nov. 14, 2019
Past District Governor Bob Rogers of Sebastopol, a strong advocate for Rotary International’s efforts to end polio worldwide, is the guest speaker at the Santa Rosa Sunrise Rotary Club meeting on Nov. 14. Rogers, a polio survivor, led the Pedaling for Polio bike ride when he was district governor in 2017-18, and again last year. When Rogers was district governor, RI President Ian Riseley’s theme was “Making a Difference.” And as RI Secretary John Hewko said recently, “We are on the verge of leaving the world a gift that will last for as long as humans inhabit this planet.” A planet free of the polio virus …. How’s that for “Making a Difference”? Bob joined the Sebastopol Rotary Club in 2007, and years later joined the district PolioPlus Committee under Chair Larry Myers. Now Bob is taking a major role in speaking to clubs about eradicating polio. Bob spent his career as an airline pilot, retiring from USAirways. He says Rotary is his second career. |
