Dear Fellow Rotarians: This year, in celebration of our 50th anniversary, the Rotary club of Edmonton Strathcona donated $50,000 to CASA Mental Health. Why? Because we felt the organization is leading the way in supporting children and their families in their struggle with the challenge of mental illness. Each of us knows someone who is facing this struggle and we wanted to serve that need. Did you know that about 20 per cent of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder? And only one out of five children receive appropriate mental health services. CASA Mental Health has developed an innovative approach by creating CASA Classrooms. This program is leading edge in North America. No other organization serving mental health for children provides this inclusive program. CASA Classrooms are a new model of mental health care that integrates services directly into schools. These classrooms are already in six communities across the province, with an additional seven coming this September and even more in early 2025 and beyond. But CASA Classrooms don’t just serve one community: a CASA Classroom in one location serves multiple geographic communities. These are the classrooms in the Edmonton area. Opened September 2023 Edmonton: J.A. Fife School (grades four to six) Edmonton: St. Gabriel Catholic School (grades seven to nine) Fort Saskatchewan: Fort Saskatchewan Elementary (grades four to six) Opening September 2024 Edmonton: St. Joseph Catholic High School (grades 10-12) Edmonton: Rosslyn Junior High School (grades seven to nine) Sherwood Park: Bev Facey Community High (grades 10-11) As leaders in our community, Rotarians have an opportunity to support CASA as it strives to implement Classrooms for the benefit of our youth and their families.
