The Atlanta Host Organization Committee is offering some good old-fashioned Southern hospitality at the Rotary International Convention from 10 to 14 June. It has planned a wide range of activities featuring everything from good food and music to inspiring tours of local landmarks. If it’s your first convention, these events are chances to meet fellow Rotarians from around the world, and if you’re an experienced convention goer, you can catch up with old friends. Hall of Fame baseball player Hank Aaron will host Rotarians for a “Strike Out Polio” night at the new SunTrust Park, where you’ll...

When Teguest Yilma helped found the Rotary Club of Addis Ababa Entoto in 2002, she thought polio had already been eradicated from most of the world. But while Ethiopia had been free of the disease, Yilma was shocked to learn that new cases had started cropping up in surrounding countries such as Somalia. “I was thinking, it’s not possible, we can’t be free if the countries around us are not free,” she says. Yilma, the managing editor of Capital, Ethiopia’s largest English weekly newspaper, has brought a journalist’s skills to the fight against polio. She became vice chair of the Ethiopia...

Battling breast cancer in 2000, Kathryn Smith found comfort pursuing her lifelong interest in Franklin D. Roosevelt. The more she read, the more intrigued she became with the 32nd U.S. president’s private secretary, Marguerite Alice “Missy” LeHand. “I thought, what a fascinating life she had because she was by his side through the polio crisis, establishing the polio rehabilitation center in Warm Springs and then after his return to politics,” she says. Smith, a past president of the Rotary Club of Greater Anderson, S.C., and a longtime newspaper journalist, turned that curiosity into a book...

One of United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s earliest memories is of fleeing with his family into the mountains during the Korean War, his village burning behind him. His father and grandfather had to forage for food in the woods; his mother gave birth to his siblings away from anything remotely resembling a health facility. “I have known hunger,” he says. “I have known war, and I have known what it means to be forced to flee conflict.” The soldiers who came to their rescue were flying the blue flag of the United Nations. The UN provided them with food and their schools with books....

Like a lot of us, I spent much of my childhood riding bikes, but fell out of the habit for a while. Forty years. Then my wife and I moved to New York, where cyclists risk their necks in a daily Thunderdome of cabs, police cars, firetrucks, double-decker buses, messengers on motorbikes, and delivery trucks backing around corners at 20 miles an hour. Not for me! At least not until my 50th birthday, when my metabolic furnace flamed out. Calories started going directly from beer bottle to beer belly. It was time to start exercising. Either that or give up Samuel Adams, and I couldn’t do that to...

Police Check UPDATE
Members are reminded about the UPDATED District Volunteer Security Policy, DOWNLOAD HERE.

This policy was generated from the requirement of our insurance company providing liability coverage in case of issues arising from members and non-Rotarians working with youth and other vulnerable members of our society.

The policy provides that all involved Rotarians and non-Rotarians complete a vulnerable persons police check.  Click on "Read more..." or title 'Police Check' to read more about the relaxed submission procedure which has been greatly simplified.

Contact Hans Granholm, 780-466-5566 for more information.

Stories
Harald Kukertz, Classification Refresher
This past Tuesday we heard a classification refresher from Harald Kukertz, a twenty four year member of our Rotary Club, a Paul Harris Fellow, a sustaining member and also a man with eleven years perfect attendance. His classification is General Law, but I suspect his true love is music, as this is a man who has Bryan Adams’ hit ‘Eighteen Till I Die’ as his ring tone.

Harald was born and raised in Aachen, Germany, just west of Cologne.  His father was an architect who also loved music. Harald’s father died when he was eight and he was raised by his mother. Harald finished high school in Germany and came to Canada to visit his uncle, and loved it so much, that on returning home he worked and saved until he could return again. At seventeen he returned and spent some time, having a good time, in Vancouver. At eighteen, he came to Edmonton to study and stay. He completed law at the U of A and became a Canadian citizen when he joined the bar. He has practiced law in Edmonton since that time, first for a large firm and then as an independent lawyer. He has also taught business classes at NAIT, served on his local community league and belonged to the German Business Association. He served as the Honorary Consul for the Federal Republic of Germany for several years, where he helped to process local citizenship applications to the Federal Republic of Germany, acted as a local representative at public events, promoted collaborations with the U of A and other institutions, and visited German citizens in jail.

He met his wife Irene here in Canada, but she is from the same part of Germany as him. They have two children (twins) who are now grown. Harald coached their soccer teams for many years. He has always been a music fan and constantly has music playing in the background. He also attends as many concerts as he can and has a huge collection of music.  He has powered through some very serious health issues in the past, as he inherited the kidney disease that took his father. He received a kidney transplant nine years ago, and has done well ever since.

He and Irene are enjoying his partial retirement and have done quite a bit of travelling, with several long trips to Hawaii, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Thailand, Nepal, Bali, Singapore, China, Chile and Easter Island. He has hiked the Milford track in the mountains of New Zealand, gone hiking in Nepal, diving in Fiji and even did a micro flite over Victoria Falls. They also took part in the recent trips to South Africa and Greece. Harald and Irene look forward to being able to continue travelling and enjoying the music for as long as they can.

Distinguished Service Award for Dmitri
On 24 Feb, our President, Dmitri Papanicolas, was honored at the Consulting Engineers of Alberta 2017 Awards Ceremony, where he received the Lieutenant Governor’s Award for Distinguished Service.

The award was given in recognition of his thirty years of service with Thurber Engineering Ltd, and also his twenty-four years of service to the community through the Rotary Club of Edmonton Strathcona.

Campbell Chow gave a short presentation accompanied by a video on his many achievements with Thurber Engineering, and more specifically in his field of geotechnical engineering.

Read Dimitri's success story and view the Lieutenant Governor's citation.  CLICK HERE

He helped to expand the services that Thurber provides through the years to incorporate geo-environmental engineering, and construction materials engineering.  For the last four years, Dmitri has been a specialist consultant with Thurber, acting as a mentor for younger engineers, helping them with their technical and business management skills.

We would like to congratulate him on receiving this very prestigious honour.

Mar 3 ...and then there's...that!?!

Three vampires walk into a bar. The first one says, "I'll have a pint of blood."

The second one says, "I'll have one, too."

The third one says, "I'll have a pint of plasma."

The bartender says, "So, that'll be two Bloods and a Blood Lite?"
