Out of the Grey Cup but not the Community. 

In a recent presentation to the Club, Brad Morgan (Community Relations Coordinator for the Edmonton Eskimos Football Club) it was obvious that the citizens of Edmonton have reason to be  proud of the team and its contribution to our community and surrounding area. The 'game' is actually only one facet of their business. 

Eskimo involvement with "Champions of the community" is supported by Alberta Lotteries. There are 10 segments supported by the Edmonton Eskimo alumni, including Education, Environment, Health, Minor Football, Special events and Youth.

  • "Raise a Reader" program. Supported by players who go out to some 40+ city schools to read to the students. This program ties into the "Tools for Schools" annual project (United Way) which has been and will continue to be coordinated by Ed Hervey.
  • The "Stay in School" program has been in progress for 10 years with 60+ schools being served in 2006. There is ample evidence that the students are motivated by what the players have to say. The current plan is to expand the program to outlying areas.
  • Environmental Program will be initiated in 2008 with a stadium 'green' program thru recyling and other initiatives.
  • Health Program:  Fitness and nutrition will be the focus. Statistics and studies show that unless children today become more active, they will not outlive their parents.
  • Leadership and Volunteerism:  Proceeds from 50/50 sales at regular Eskimo games are directed to the support of the two minor football teams - the Wildcats and the Huskies.
  • Player Initiatives:  Kidney Foundation, Diabetes, Kids with Cancer
  • Special Events:  Every summer Eskimos players host "Monday Morning Magic" (the first Monday of CapitalEX) in ensuring the safety and enjoyment for children with disabilities by providng one-on-one assistance during rides and other activities.
  • Youth: currently working together with EPS and RCMP in the D.A.R.E program.
  • The Alumni support organizations such as Rotary in donating funds or auction items for Rotary fundraising initiatives.
