A team of ophthalmologists spent two days last month at Kishermoruak Primary School in the Maasai Mara Reserve of southern Kenya, completing comprehensive eye examinations for the 416 pupils, all arranged locally by the Ridgewood Rotary Club. |

Ridgewood Rotary Supports Women's Self Reliance Through Bee-keeping! Ridgewood Rotary Club is offering 25 women in the community of Maasai Mara Reserve in southern Kenya an opportunity to learn bee-keeping with the object of supplementing their family income through the sale of honey and other products such as candles and cosmetics.

District Governor Lenny Agrusti wears many hats. In addition to his work-a-day job and the added responsibilities keeping tabs on the 56 Rotary Clubs spread across three counties, Lenny has been a member of the New Jersey First Aid Council for 36 years, while maintaining various roles for the Wayne First Aid Squad and the American Heart Association. His volunteer efforts earned him the First Aider of the Year Award from the Wayne Squad in 2010 and he is a life member of the Tri-Boro First Aid Squad, reflecting community involvement spanning more than three decades.

On April 2nd (2013) high winds and torrential rains struck K-school, stripping the roof off one block, containing classrooms for Grades 5-8. In addition, several of the interior walls showed major cracks due to the stress caused by the roof girders being twisted and blown away. Fortunately, there were no casualties since routinely the school is in recess for the month of April. It is not clear who is responsible for repairing or rehabilitating the building. Under the new National Constitution which came into effect on January 1, a new County legislative structure was introduced providing a new chief executive or Governor and an elected Legislature. Mr. Henry Siololo, former K-School teacher, is now a member of the Legislature, and he has assured his support for rebuilding the classrooms when the Legislature becomes a reality in June. However, the Parents' Council has already met and determined that each family will be assessed a portion of the anticipated funds necessary to repair the damages. Ridgewood Rotary has asked a professional engineer from nearby Narok, the County-seat, to visit the school and to assess the damages and recommend a remedy to get the classrooms up and running as quickly as possible. Once his report is received, Ridgewood Rotary Kenya School Committee will meet to determine its course of action.

Rotary Ridgewood in Action
School is open for Kenyan students
When the Preschool and Kindergarten pupils at Kishermoruak Primary School in Kenya returned last week after their August recess and a one-week nationwide teachers’ strike, big changes awaited them and their teachers. Instead of the corrugated tin “shack” they departed in late July, --- a hot and dusty hovel with a dirt floor and hole where a window should be--- the kiddies gathered in two bright, new classrooms, the latest project of the on-going support K-School has been receiving from the Ridgewood Rotary Club.

Pedals for Progress, in its continuing effort to recycle bicycles
properly, is having a used bike collection sponsored by the Ridgewood
Rotary Club. Anyone with an adult or child's bicycle in repairable
condition is urged to donate his or her bike to this worthy cause. We do not
accept "bikes for parts" or disassembled bikes. Bikes can be dropped off
from 9 AM to 12 Noon on Saturday, May 15, 2010 rain or shine @ the
YMCA, 112 Oak St, Ridgewood NJ 07450.
