Our off-site breakfast at Caon Cafe in Hindley Street was an outstanding success, as was our visit to the beautifully designed SA Heath & Medical Research Centre (the cheese grater building) on North Terrace.We had a great turnout of 30 members and partners - Maritana, Ellen, Pam, Hugh, Jeffrey and Di. Rohan came off LOA for the tour too.
Recognising the challenges facing health and medical research, the South Australian Government commissioned the Review of Health & Medical Research in SA, conducted by Professor John Shine and Mr Alan Young AM, which recommended the establishment of a dedicated, flagship research institute for South Australia.
In response to this recommendation, the South Australian Government committed to establish SAHMRI in 2008, and the Federal Government allocated $200 million to build the research facility. In December 2009, SAHMRI was incorporated as the state’s first independent flagship health and medical research institute.
As a new entity, SAHMRI will significantly increase the nation’s capacity for leading scientific research by:
Building a team of more than 600 outstanding researchers, who will work together in the search for better treatments and cures for some of the world’s most challenging diseases
Creating a world-class precinct of medical research and clinical application, with state of the art laboratories and equipment in a purpose-built, iconic, 25,000 square-metre facility, adjacent to the site of the new Royal Adelaide Hospital (new RAH)
Actively fostering and nurturing a new generation of the top research minds, and undertaking extensive and interactive community engagement and education programs.
SAHMRI undertakes research into six primary categories
Aboriginal health
Cancer
Healthy mothers, babies and children
Infection and immunity
Mind and brain
Nutrition and metabolism
Our tour was conducted by Fundraising Manager Tony Ashdown who took us to the top of the building and then we wended our way down via the central spiral staircase. This open plan building (except for the actual research laboratories which are sealed) is beautifully laid out and Tony explained that only one type of machine was purchased for all sections - as this encouraged other in-situ laboratories to come down and use it with the possibility of melding information gathered for say one type of research with that of the "host" area that provides the equipment.
At the end of our tour, we met with SAHMRI's Deputy Director Professor Alex Brown who is working in the Aboriginal Health area. We have invited Professor Brown to our club to hear more of his research in coming months.
Our tour of SAHMRI was an excellent fundraising experience - that is SAHMRI charges $15 per head for a tour of the building- and that money is then ploughed back into their research. An excellent idea! Our thanks to Tony and Alex - and our own Phil Harding for arranging the visit.

1. Clare Art Show Opening on May 15th Clare Rotary Club Art Show, being run in conjunction with the Clare Wine and Gourmet Weekend. 2. Rotary Leadership Institute
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a fast-paced course, now offered over two days on one weekend. It aims to consolidate leadership skills of participants and to increase understanding of Rotary.
The second RLI Course for this Rotary year is a Joint District 9500/9520 Course and will be held on
Saturday May 23 & Sunday May 24 from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm at Blackfriars Priory School, Prospect.
Cost: $180.00

The Calperum project is the largest and best Environmental project Rotary District 9500/9520 have. We are pleased to now have a quarterly Newsletter. We are seeking Rotarians and/or interested people from Rotary District 9500 to join the Calperum Committee and assist in developing this great project. 4. Trailblazer by the Sea
The Rotary Club of Adelaide has joined forces with Surf Lifesaving SA to conduct Trailblazer by the Sea on Sunday May 3, 2015. This is an exciting even for keen runners right through to families who just simply want a family fun walk. The various stages and team events will finish at Henley Square near the Surf Lifesaving Club. RCoA is happy to hear from other Rotary Clubs who might like to assist and or work with their local SLSSA Club. Please help spread the word to as many people as you can. 5. Regency Park RC Nepal and International Theme Night
ROTARY CLUB of REGENCY PARK invites you and a guest to attend our NEPAL & INTERNATIONAL THEME NIGHT on Tuesday 28th April.

6. Rotary Club of Adelaide - Celebration of the Motorcar Sunday, 26 April, 2015 - 10.00 am - 3.30 pm in the beautiful grounds of Carrick Hill, Springfield. Showcasing 140 of the creme de la creme of collectable cars. Classical music will be performed. Free parking on-site and complimentary collectable program. A child asked his father, "How were people born?" So his father said, "Adam and Eve made babies, then their babies became adults and made babies, and so on." The child then went to his mother, asked her the same question and she told him, "We were monkeys then we evolved to become like we are now." The child ran back to his father and said, "You lied to me!" His father replied, "No, your mum was talking about her side of the family."
Books
A chicken walks into a library, goes up to a librarian and says, "Book book book." The librarian decides that the chicken wants a book so he gives the chicken a book and the chicken walks away. About ten minutes later the chicken comes back with the book, looking a bit agitated, saying, "Book book book." The librarian decides the chicken wants another book so he takes the old book back and gives the chicken another book. The chicken walks out the door. Ten minutes later the chicken comes back again, very agitated, saying, "Book book book!" so quickly it almost sounds like one word. The chicken puts the book on the librarians desk and looks up - waiting for another book. This time the librarian gives the chicken another book and decides that something weird is happening. He follows the chicken out the door and into the park, all the way to the pond. In the pond is a frog sitting on a lily pad. The chicken gives the book to the the frog, who then says, "Reddit, reddit."
