It was great to welcome back as guest speaker one of our former Rotarians of around 10 years ago - Stefan Neszpor. Stefan is a hypnotherapist and psychiatrist at his Parkside practice. He trained as a child psychiatrist and became increasingly interested in family systems and the impact of relationships on people's well being and self esteem.
His talk was entitled "Our Search for Meaning" and wove his talk on fear, feeling of security or insecurity and safety as well as coping with terrifying situations against the backdrop of his recent visit to the Dardanelles in Turkey and the fear that each World War I soldier would have experienced when fighting their way to shore and digging in to save their lives and those of their comrades.
With the battlefield lines ony 100 metres apart,Stefan explained the range of emotions that these men would have been feeling - and the immensity of his own emotion that took him by surprise when he visited the site almost 100 years later. Stefan talked of mateship, looking within, adaption and courage, grief, sorrow, sadness and alone-ness. While visiting the war graves, he talked with a Turkish man who had come to pay his respects to the men of both countries who lost their lives during the Anzac Cove battle. The Turkish man mentioned that in his small village, boys as young as 14yo had been conscripted to fight - and that only 6 of the 14 had returned. Loses were great on both sides - and Stefan said "in the worst of terror we see nobility, courage and humanity; the same as that exhibited by Rotarians" with RI's promotion of Peace Scholarships and Peace Charters. Stefan finished by showing images of the Lone Pine cemetery wall at Anzac Cove with this statement by Ataturk:
"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives…
You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours…
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from faraway countries wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace, after having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well."

So two Irishmen are traveling to Australia. Before they leave home, one of their dads gives them both a bit of advice: "You watch them Aussie cab drivers. They'll rob you blind. Don't you go paying them what they ask. You haggle."
At the Sydney airport, the Irishmen catch a cab to their hotel. When they reach their destination, the cabbie says, "That'll be twenty dollars, lads."
"Oh no you don't! My dad warned me about you. You'll only be getting fifteen dollars from me," says one of the men. "And you'll only be getting fifteen from me too," adds the other.
