Our guest speaker this week was Kristina Dryza, recognised as one of the top consumer trends experts in the world – The Australian Financial Review described her as “…one of the five leading futurists” – Kristina Dryza has consulted to the boards of Virgin Group, BSkyB, MSN and more. However, Kristina describes herself as a ‘nowist’.
Armed with an arts degree of eclectic subjects, including anthropology (her major), Aboriginal cosmology, history and political philosophy, Kristina initially worked in branding and marketing before finding her niche in consumer trends.
Of Lithuanian origin Kristina was raised in Adelaide, Australia and moved overseas in 1999. Since then she has been based between London, New York, Tokyo and Hawaii while traveling the world gaining insight into emerging social, cultural and consumer trends for top international companies.
She currently contributes thought-leadership pieces to leading behavioural insights practices, research firms and trend forecasting sites around the world. She is frequently asked to present on her specialism: pattern recognition, rhythms, seasons, cycles and their impact on creativity, leadership and innovation. Kristina believes, living with the rhythms is not about being on time but being in time, with the world around you.
Kristina mentioned that she does not speak in a linear fashion and quoted an interesting comment by F. Scott Fitzgerald “the sign of insanity is to be able to hold two opposing thoughts in the mind at the same time, and not go insane.”
In a discussion with James Murdoch on the future of travel, Kristina commented that everyone wanted to be an explorer like Captain Cook, but at the same time wanted to have their smart phones and cashmere cloaks and so on. When challenged by Murdoch on the apparent contradiction, she responded that the feelings have to be taken in context, because everything we do has to be seen in the context of what is around us at the time. “If you don’t have context there is no relevance and if you don’t have relevance there is no right to exist”.
Kristina’s unique approach to reviewing and challenging conventional prediction of future trends left Club members with plenty to think about. She commented that most times people set out to research an issue and deliver an hypothesis, whereas she believes the best way is to have an hypothesis and research the proof of concept.
Don also mentioned that he and Phil had visited Atlas McNeil on Magill Road to get details of the items they are donating to our Club, for distribution to deserving organisations. More information will be supplied later.

In 2001-2002 RI President Rick King, in seeking to revitalise giving to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, promoted the concept of Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) which meant that ideally every Rotarian would contribute to The Foundation each year as part of their philanthropic responsibility as business and professional leaders in society. He suggested a gift of US$100 or more as a reasonable starting point.
Donations (with the application form) are sent to Team Centurion at the address on the application form to be recorded and sent to The Rotary Foundation Trust at Parramatta once a month. A tax-deductible receipt is then sent to the donor via the club. Donations of $100 or more are very welcome. All personal donations are deposited into the Annual Programs Fund, for which the donor gains PHF Recognition points, and the funds support for the Foundation's humanitarian programs. Rotarians whose donations over time reach US$1,000 are eligible to receive a Paul Harris
Fellow award.
Please forward all contributions (including Card payments and Direct Debit payments) directly to the Team Centurion. This enables the Team Centurion and the District Governor to have a complete picture of personal giving to the Annual Programs Fund which assists in the planning for the use of grant funds in our District in coming years.
A strong Rotary Foundation means a strong Rotary.

Cashtration (n.): The act of buying a house, which renders the subject financially impotent for an indefinite period of time.
Intaxicaton : Euphoria at getting a tax refund, which lasts until you realise it was your money to start with.
Reintarnation : Coming back to life as a hillbilly.
Bozone ( n.): The substance surrounding stupid people that stops bright ideas from penetrating. The bozone layer, unfortunately, shows little sign of breaking down in the near future.
Giraffiti : Vandalism spray-painted very, very high
Sarchasm : The gulf between the author of sarcastic wit and the person who doesn't get it.
Inoculatte : To take coffee intravenously when you are running late.
Osteopornosis : A degenerate disease. (This one got extra credit.)
Karmageddon : It's like, when everybody is sending off all these really bad vibes, right? And then, like, the Earth explodes and it's like, a serious bummer.
Decafalon (n.): The grueling event of getting through the day consuming only things that are good for you.
Dopeler Effect: The tendency of stupid ideas to seem smarter when they come at you rapidly.
Arachnoleptic Fit (n.): The frantic dance performed just after you've accidentally walked through a spider web.
Beelzebug (n.): Satan in the form of a mosquito, that gets into your bedroom at three in the morning and cannot be cast out.
Caterpallor ( n.): The color you turn after finding half a worm in the fruit you're eating.
