Welcome to the 2019-20 Rotary year.

Our next official meeting is a breakfast meeting on Thursday 25 July at the Stamford Hotel. This coming Thursday 18 July is a Coffee Conversation for those who are free at the White Picket Coffee House, 10 Stuart Road, Dulwich, at 9.30am.

Last week was RYLA week and our club co-sponsored with the Adelaide Club the RYLA celebration function on Wed 10 July with some of our members also attending.

Last Thursday was our club changeover with the Hon. Rachel Sanderson, District Governor Jane Owens and Past-District Governor David Egan and his wife Chris in attendance. The event was a great success largely due to the preparation of John Campbell, Club Secretary, who organised the event including securing us the Stamford Plaza as our venue for the event and for our future club meetings. Thank you, John, for all your efforts.

Last year was a year of change for our club to strengthen the club and hopefully make us more appealing to new members. We have secured the Stamford Plaza as our meeting place with a contract in place for a year so that we won’t be ‘bumped’ from our meeting room by another hotel client and we are trialling the evening meetings for six months.

This year to action the 2019-20 Rotary theme ‘Rotary Connects the World’, I plan to grow our connections with other Rotary clubs and grow the impact of our projects by undertaking joint projects when funding requirements are sizeable.  More on this later, once I’ve discussed some ideas and funding requirements with our Board.

Julie Campbell has emailed members a list of community projects that were identified at a recent club meeting. Please email Julie if you would like to be the champion of any of the projects that were identified.  We would encourage new members to see if there is a project they would like to champion.

Despite the wintry weather, our BBQ at Bunnings on Monday 15th July raised $1049 (net). While drinks sales were low, it was school holidays so there were lots of hungry children wanting a sausage. We were kept amused by the antics of some of the children in the rain trying out their raincoats by running under the waterfalls coming off the roof of the Bunnings tent. On the other hand, we were desperately trying to keep the sausages and bread dry from the rain.  Our new credit machine was trialled by Angus and Bruce and was very successful in securing a few extra sales. Thank you to everyone who helped at the BBQ, and to Di Lane for organising it.

The WCH Foundation Beach House Launch - parking assistance
Heidi Wolff, the Community Fundraiser Officer for the Women's & Children's Hospital Foundation, has asked whether our club members would consider helping with carparking in Victor Harbor over the w/e of 20-21 July.

The details were in last week’s edition and again this week, headlined as The WCHF Foundation Beach House Launch.

I plan to do the Sat. 12 noon - 2.30pm shift and am keen to car share. Please let me know if you can join me and/ or if you can do another shift and I will liaise with Heidi with our club's firm numbers.

The WCH Foundation Beach House Launch
Request for assistance with parking at Victor Harbor, 20-21 July
This request comes from Heidi Wolff, Community Fundraising Officer, Women's & Children's Hospital Foundation.

Official opening of "The Beach House"
The Women’s & Children’s Hospital (WCH) Foundation Beach House is South Australia’s first purpose-built holiday home for families with children with complex medical needs or in palliative care.  Located at Encounter Lakes, Victor Harbor, the Beach House is specifically designed, constructed and medically equipped to meet the needs of some of the Hospital’s sickest children.  The Beach House is a very special place for children and their families to relax and create precious memories together.

What we need:
We are after Parking attendants on the weekend to help direct cars to the parking we have managed to secure at the Victor Harbor Hospital (300 metre walk). We will be having about 90 cars on the Saturday and 150 on the Sunday. We don’t have to be Rotarians.  Anyone that we can organise a quick DCSI check for:

Saturday 20 July – Official Opening 2-4pm
Time required: 12:00pm – 5:00pm (2 shifts)

Sunday 21 July – Morning Tea  + Community Open Day
Time required: 10:15am-3:30pm (2 shifts)

You will need to:
  • Wear WCH Foundation branded high vis vests.
  • Wear enclosed shoes
  • Have a current Police or DCSI check
If you can help, contact Heidi at 8464 7900 or Heidi.Wolff@wchfoundation.org.au

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

Jokes Corner

The local news station was interviewing an 80 year old lady because she had gotten married for the fourth time. The interviewer asked her questions about her life, about what it felt like marrying again at 80, and then about her new husband’s occupation.

“He’s a funeral director”, she answered.

Interesting the news man thought…

He then asked her if she wouldn’t mind telling him a little about her first three husbands and what they did for a living.

She paused for a few moments, needing time to reflect on all those years. After a short time, a smile came to her face and she answered proudly, explaining that she first married a banker when she was in her 20s, then a circus ring master when in her 40s, and a preacher in her 60s, and now in her 80s – a funeral director.

The interviewer looked at her, quite astonished, and asked why she had married four men with such diverse careers.

“I married one for the money, two for the show, three to get ready, and four to go.”
