Stories
President's Pen

It was quite a different week for Adelaide Light Rotary as instead of a breakfast meeting, Don Tindale organised for us to do a Tour of Haigh’s Chocolate Factory followed by lunch. We had a most informative tour guide who led us through the history of the 102 year old company and then explained the chocolate making process along whilst also providing chocolate tastings. I think most of us assumed the process would be very automated and were quite unaware of the labour intensive and personal skill  required to make certain chocolates. Thanks Don.

John Wotherspoon then arranged a social evening on Friday night at Café 77, Unley in the form of a Spanish tapas meal. Food was delicious, location great and company fun. Thank you John.

I am pleased to announce that this year Adelaide Light will joint sponsor with the Rotary Club of Tea Tree Gully, two National  Youth Science Forum students – Christine Xu who attends Wilderness School and Shayla Jai Platt who attends Marryatville High School. It is hoped both students will visit our club before they go to the forum in January 2018 and report back to us on their return. It is a few years since our club has sponsored a NYSF student and this year we responded to a call from Mike Stevens District 9500 NYSF Chair for additional support for already selected students who due to lack of sponsorship may not have been able to attend the forum. Our Board has also expressed our concern to  the district re the selection process which allowed this situation to occur. Any club member wishing to see this correspondence please contact myself or Vocational Team Leader Don Tindale.

Please let Di Lane know if you wish to order any Rotary Xmas cakes or puddings by 17 November.

A date to place in your diary is Friday 1st December for our Xmas function. It will involve an evening meal, petanque skills and rotaractors will be invited.

Thought for the week:

Having dreams without goals is like having sight without vision.

1.     Rotary District Conference

The combined Rotary Conference to be held in the Barossa Arts and Convention Centre in 2018 will feature a Rotary Showcase where Clubs, District and Rotary affiliated programs can display and issue materials to publicise their activities.

Clubs and Organisations are invited to apply for the allocation of Display Spaces at the Conference. The Convenor of the Rotary Showcase is PP Les Dennis (RC Regency Park) lesdennis@bigpond.com  0408813966.  Because this is a combined Conference highlighting Coming Together,  it is likely that there will be a heavy demand for available spaces. Convenors and key personnel are urged to contact Les to reserve a spot in the display area asap. The Conference commences at 1pm on Friday 23rd March with Registration open from 9.30am. The conference concludes at 1pm on Sunday 25th March.

Australian Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians.

Australian Rotary Health is one of the largest independent funders of mental health research within Australia. ARH also provides funding for many other general health areas across Australia.

Headspace is the National Youth Mental Health Foundation providing early intervention mental health services to 12-25 year olds, along with assistance in promoting young peoples’ wellbeing. This covers four core areas: mental health, physical health, work and study support and alcohol and other drug services.

Rob Walters is working through the Australian Golfing Fellowship of Rotarians Inc. to present the 2018 Annual Golf Tournament at Murray Bridge, 8th to 13th April 2018. Any golfing Rotarians and friends who are financial members of an affiliated Golf Club and who hold a current Australian handicap or equivalent, can be a part of this exciting competition, to enjoy golf with many others, and make a much needed contribution to the above two organisations devoted to helping those at risk in our communities.

Division 1 Golfer handicap 0-15

Division 2 Golfer handicap 16-23

Division 3 Golfer handicap Men 24-36, Women 24-45

The Four Way Test

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Affirmation

United in the spirit of Service we value truth, fairness and friendship; and we welcome the opportunity that Rotary gives us to contribute our talents and resources in support of others.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement
