Last Wednesday, in lieu of our normal Thursday breakfast, our club members  and other Group 1 clubs joined Adelaide Rotary for the “Howzat Adelaide Oval Rotary Luncheon” where we heard former test cricketers Henry Olonga and Kim Hughes preview the upcoming 2nd Ashes Test and touch on their cricket and life experiences. We were also privileged to hear Henry sing! 

The luncheon also supported financially the combined Adelaide Rotary Clubs Rohingya Refugee emergency response project. Our club has personally donated $1800 to assist with the purchase of solar battery lighting for a health clinic.

It was pleasing that seven Adelaide Light Rotarians were able to attend the Adelaide City Rotaract Club meeting on Monday 27th November to see a new rotaractor inducted into the club, join  in some getting to know you activities, hear of their current and planned projects and in particular to participate in the evaluation of the mentoring program which has been running between both clubs this Rotary year. 

We thank Rotaractor Heidi and Rotarian John K for their involvement in ensuring this program firstly got off the ground but also that it was deemed a success - thanks also to Gregory & Yvette, and Tina and John W who spoke about their experiences as mentees and mentors. Heidi and John K indicated they would like to continue and/or extend the program, perhaps also including more training and goal setting.

Thanks to our Rotarians Katrina, Fred, Richard, Rob, Yvette, Don, Angus and John W for their willingness to act as mentors to our rotaractors.

Last Friday many of our members enjoyed a very special Xmas Petanque Evening : the food was delicious, company was exceptional, our hosts Rada, Claudia, Dominic and John were delightful, some Rotarians displayed amazing sporting skills (others were abysmal!), Rotaractors were able to join us, and it was just good fun. We certainly received value for money. A contentious issue, was the awarding of the Rotary/Rotaract Events Troph,y which this year went to Adelaide City Rotaract Club. I do trust that next year Adelaide Light will train harder and return  the trophy to its rightful owners. It was wonderful that so many partners were able to join us on this evening as their involvement is an integral part of our club.

The next three weekends will see all of us involved in the sale of Xmas Trees at Bunnings, Kent Town. It is a big commitment for our club but also a great fundraising opportunity which then allows our club to carry our projects both in the community and abroad, so thank you for your support. Rob does an enormous job in organising this and we are grateful.

An important date to remember is Friday 12^th January 2018, when our Club is holding a  film night – the film is “Breathe” , tickets are $20 and an email outlining all other details was sent out last week. If by any chance you have not received a flyer, please contact me and I will resend. We are asking  each Rotarian to buy one ticket themselves and sell another three – by doing this we will be able to maximise our fundraising and ensure costs are covered. Please ensure this evening is a success.
