President's Message
President’s Pen 7 Aug 2016

This week, in lieu of our normal Thursday morning meeting, Club members joined with thousands of others to “Walk a mile in my boots” from Victoria Park; along Wakefield Street and up Hutt Street to the South Parklands, where a Hutt Street Centre BBQ breakfast was served to participants.

This is an annual event during Homeless Prevention Week to raise money to support the homeless people in Adelaide by charging participants $25 per head to walk in the cold starting at 7:30 am.  This enables the Hutt Street Centre to provide basic, essential services that many of us take for granted such as a hearty meal, a hot shower, a locker to store precious few belongings and access to professional and health services.

Participating in the walk provides citizens with a small opportunity to experience what it is like to walk along the streets early in the morning seeking a shower, meal, cup of tea and a warm, welcoming place.

As commented by the Hutt Street Center, “By joining us and walking a mile in the boots of a person experiencing homelessness, you're helping make someone doing it tough realise they are not alone. Because no person who is homeless should feel like they’re walking alone”.

Next Meeting

Following on from previous Club meetings, where members voted on community projects for this Rotary year, the Community Service director would be seeking volunteers to run the identified projects, and assist with identifying fund raising opportunities for raising the funds needed to complete the projects.

Fun Evening
Adelaide Light Rotarians and friends are invited to join other club members for a fun evening at The Hungarian Club on Saturday 13th August 7pm – this is the same venue where we held our very successful quiz night. $25 provides you with an authentic Hungarian buffet comprising of three goulash’s , salads, pickles etc, desert and a live band.

I just require an indication of numbers to book a table so we can all sit together as payment is to be paid on the night upon entry to the Hungarian Club.

Let me know if you can join us as we watch President Don “bust a few moves” on the dance floor.

District News

1.     Foundation Centenary District 9500

This Rotary year is the 100th anniversary of the Rotary Foundation. Since humble beginnings in 1917 our charity the Foundation has developed into a major benefactor for Rotary Clubs around the world. The RI theme this year of Rotarians Serving Humanity is a fitting tribute to this year.

Our District 9500 has the opportunity to showcase the work of our Clubs through the Foundation in our local communities and around the world.

This year we have been asked to be part of a drive to secure $300 million worldwide in contributions to the Foundation and participate in the District Foundation Goals.

1. every club to be involved in and with project funded by the Foundation
2. pledges for 100 bequests along with 100 major donors
3. $160k raised for the District through public, corporate and government support

Many activities are being planned on a national and District basis these include

1. Promotions in the RDU magazine, RI and RA websites, social media
2. TV commercials
3. Light up an iconic building
4. Federal and State and local government sponsorship
5. A major national movie release on 23 February for End Polio

Ways to celebrate

Here are just a few ways you can join in and commemorate this historic milestone:

Plan a special Rotary Day and invite everyone in your community to participate. It can be anything from a concert to a race to a birthday party with a giant cake in the shape of the Rotary wheel.

Hold a fundraiser in your community to support a Foundation grant project, the Rotary Peace
Centres or PolioPlus.

Organise or participate in a global grant or district grant project.

Promote your club or district projects that are funded by the Foundation.

Dedicate some club meetings to Rotary Foundation topics.

Challenge members to increase your club’s contributions to the Foundation.

See more ideas for a Rotary Day event in the Centennial promotion kit.

Publicise your events

Promote your centennial events and projects by contacting local media and by using #TRF100 on social media. List the events on Rotary Showcase for more exposure.

Regular celebration updates will be sent through the ROTIAC and the District Website.
Please send me your Club plans to celebrate this 100th anniversary of the Foundation so that your celebrations can be promoted to all of the clubs in the District.

Paige and Heidi from Adelaide City Rotaract Club, along with Bianca from Salisbury City Rotaract Club) decided to get on board with Project Starfish. Project Starfish is focused on supporting the Rescue Mission for Children Centre in Northern Thailand who work with a highly vulnerable group of minority tribal children who are at risk of being abducted into sexual slavery.

Jokes Corner

Old man

Bob, a 70-year-old, extremely wealthy widower, shows up at the Country Club with a breathtakingly beautiful 25-year-old woman who knocks everyone's socks off with her youthful appearance and charm and who hangs over Bob's arm and listens intently to his every word.

His buddies at the club are all aghast. At the very first chance, they corner him and ask, 'Bob, how'd you get the trophy girlfriend?'

Bob replies, 'Girlfriend? She's my wife!'

They are knocked over, but continue to ask. 'So, how'd you persuade her to marry you?'

'I lied about my age', Bob replies.

'What, did you tell her you were only 50?'

Bob smiles and says, 'No, I told her I was 90.'
