It was with great pleasure that we welcomed back Stephen Yarwood - after a four year absence as an "Honorary" member while undertaking the time-consuming position of Lord Mayor. Stephen is now focusing on his new role as an Urban Futurist - and is setting up a consulting business for town planning that I believe will be called City 2050. Stephen has also been offered an Adjunct Professorship at the Uni in Canberra. Congratulations Stephen.
We also welcomed back Tegan Adamson - our Naval Military & Air Force Club's hostess - who spent the year travelling to many countries including visiting Gallipoli (an emotional journey when hearing both sides of the conflict), Christmas in Paris, New Year in Edinburgh and Dublin on St Patrick's Day, Slovenia, Budapest, Egypt and London (where she worked for MasterChef)... to name just a few.
A big thank you to those who volunteered their time to undertake car parking for the Clipsal 500 on the weekend - Geoff, Andrew, Richard, Bruce, Rob, David Rowe, Phil, Julie, John Campbell, Graham and Yvette. Also to Dean and Pam Sullivan who organised the roster and attended both days. We made $1520 from these two half day car parking duties for our Colombian Education Scholarship Program.
Richard flew to Port Lincon again to meet with various stakeholders involved in the D9500 Conference in late March, and to view the new AV equipment which has been purchased by the Port Lincoln Council so that our delegates will be able to view quality visuals from the speakers.
Don't forget that we will have NO MEETING at the NM&AF Club on Thursday 26 March as the majority of our members will be attending the Conference in Port Lincoln.
Guest Speaker - Kristin Carson
Kristin Carson - who was awarded the Young South Australian of the Year Award for 2015 - is a Senior Medical Research Scientist at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital. After having not done particularly well at school, Kristin worked hard to develop her skills - first starting off as a Fitness Instructor and then seeing a TAFE course being offered in Level 3 Laboratory Skills. Completion of the course resulted in jobs at IDEXX Labs and IMUS, and within six months Kristin applied for a position at the Womens and Childrens Hospital where she was required to take blood from children for analysis.
From this, Kristin turned to gastroenterology where she waded through faeces and vomit (a great breakfast subject) to identify bacterial strains. Further research involved added zinc into rice which improves the lining of the gut for people in developing countries. Kristin's current work has centred around ant-smoking research especially for indigenous people, as smoking greatly affects lung and vascular disease.
Kristin has just turned 30 and has managed to undertake some ground breaking research, she has written 50 scientific papers, presented at 80 conferences, has provided input into changing policy and practice nationally and internationally. Having been awarded the Premier's Channel 9 Young Achiever of the Year in 2015, and her Young South Australian of the Year just a few months ago, Kristin has achieved a great deal already and has the ability to achieve a great deal more.

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement
To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.
A young guy walks into a post office and sees a middle–aged, balding man standing at the counter methodically placing “Love” stamps on bright pink envelopes with hearts all over them. He then takes out a perfume bottle and sprays scent all over them.
His curiosity getting the best of him, the guy goes up to the man and asks him what he is doing.
The man says, “I’m sending out a thousand signed, “Guess who?”
