It was with great pleasure that we re-inducted former Rotarian Miriam Silva into our Club after a two year absence working interstate.Miriam was a member of our Club from March 2012 until January 2013 when she had to resign to take up employment in Victoria. Miriam returned to Adelaide late last year and had been holding the position of Acting CEO of TAFE while a new CEO could be appointed. Miriam has returned to her usual roles on various Boards including TAFE. Welcome Miriam.
We also welcomed local Hutt Street bank manager Denise Brown and Stepney Women's Community Centre's board member Kala McLean to our meeting this week, as well as Rtn David Jones of West Torrens Club who attended with our guest speaker Max McSorley.
Guest Speaker - Max McSorley - NOW in Timor Leste (East Timor)
As part of a RAWCS (Rotary Australia World Community Service) Project, in 2012 a group of West Torrens Rotary Club members in conjunction with 18-20 year olds from the Nazareth Catholic Community travelled to East Timor to work in the village of Triloka - situated 120 miles from Dili - to paint and repair community buildings and help construct a building to house a Birthing Clinic.
This was made possible due to fundraising during 2012, which enabled Nazareth through Rotary's "Donations In Kind project to ship a container of goods to the village including school furniture, equipment, medical supplies, paint and painting equipment, clothing and uniforms. Additionally the group was able to present the Triloka Community with a cheque for $20,000 to assist in the construction of the Birthing Clinic. In 2013, Triloka was supplied with medical equipment and furnishings for the Clinic and fundaising started so that a 4WD vehicle could be purchased so that Health Workers in Triloka could visit isolated villages in the mountains. In all, over $150,000 has been raised to build, renovate or equip buildings with computers or medical equipment in this village.
The assistance of Rotary in this third-world country has raised the spirits and pride of the people for their country - after much war torn strife over many years. Companies such as Solver (Valspar) and Dulux should be thanked for their generosity in supplying hundreds of litres of paint (getting close to its use by date, but still perfectly usuable!) in such exotic colours as No. 61 (all colours are just known by thier number in Timor Leste).
An excellent project that is supported by RAWCS and involves young people from Nazareth School who experienced the delight of supplying each Triloka school kid with a full pencil case that was treasured beyond measure in a country that has so little.

3. Rotary Leadership Institute
The Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) is a fast-paced course, now offered over two days on one weekend. It aims to consolidate leadership skills of participants and to increase understanding of Rotary.
The second RLI Course for this Rotary year is a Joint District 9500/9520 Course and will be held on
Saturday May 23 & Sunday May 24 from 9.00 am to 4.30 pm at Blackfriars Priory School, Prospect.

5. Trailblazer by the Sea
The Rotary Club of Adelaide has joined forces with Surf Lifesaving SA to conduct Trailblazer by the Sea on Sunday May 3, 2015. This is an exciting even for keen runners right through to families who just simply want a family fun walk. The various stages and team events will finish at Henley Square near the Surf Lifesaving Club. RCoA is happy to hear from other Rotary Clubs who might like to assist and or work with their local SLSSA Club. Please help spread the word to as many people as you can. 6. Golden Grove RC Film afternoon – The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel
Golden Grove RC will be showing ‘The Second Best Marigold Hotel’ at the Regal Cinema (the old Chelsea) on Sunday 1 March (1.45 pm for a 2.30 pm start). To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.
A helicopter carrying passengers suddenly loses engine power and the aircraft begins to decend.
The pilot safely performs an emergency landing in water, and tells the passengers to remain seated and to keep the doors closed, stating that in emergency situations, the aircraft is designed to stay afloat for 30 minutes, giving rescuers time to get to them.
Just then a man gets out if his seat and runs over to open the door.
The pilots screams at him, "Didn't you hear what I said, the aircraft is designed to stay afloat as long as the doors remain closed?!".
"Of course I heard you", the man replied, "but it's also designed to fly, and look how good that one worked out!!"
