President's Message
President’s Pen

At the Club meeting on Thursday 30th June, President Don delivered two special presentations.
The first was to hand a Paul Harris Fellow award to Rotarian David Riggall for his great service in managing the Rotary Foundation Committee for the Club for a number of years; his ongoing involvement in the Bread Run, plus providing legal advice to the Club when submitting grant applications to expand our Colombian Students Scholarship.

The second was to award an Honorary Membership to Rotarian Bob Buckerfield who, as one of the charter members of Adelaide Light, has decided to retire after 30 years service to the community.

Don recounted some of Bob’s service including coordinating and participating in the planting of over 30,000 trees outside of Blyth over a number of years.  His involvement in creating playground facilities for children; painting the homes of elderly citizens unable to afford employing someone to paint their homes, and many more.  Don also mentioned The fun experienced in a Club visit to another Rotary Club in the Adelaide Hills, in a mini bus hired by Tony Reade, with everyone singing and enjoying beer donated by Bob.

Don commented that Bob would be sorely missed as one of the reliable, committed ‘quiet achievers’ of the Club who, along with David Rowe, was usually first at the meetings to set up Club paraphernalia and last to leave.

Members are hoping that awarding honorary membership to Bob will encourage him to maintain contact with members and participate in events from time to time.

In the business session, members voted on a list of potential local and international community projects, to identify the top three in each category for further investigation and Club involvement.

The following are the selected projects, in order of preference:

Local  -                         Catherine House
                                    Bread Run
                                    Donations in Kind

International -               Cows for Cambodia
                                    Water Purifiers
                                    Hands for Humanity

Don stressed that the list is able to be modified at any time, to either remove or replace projects according to need.

Don read out extracts from the draft Club strategic plan and invited comment on the plan, in order to achieve a final version for adoption by the Club.  Members were happy to accept the essence of the plan but suggested that it be reviewed to produce a professional final version.

Message from Yvette
Yvette has been absent from the Club for a few weeks due to the birth of eight beautiful Schnauzer puppies. Sleep deprived Yvette said tending to the needs of a new mum who is dedicated to being with her puppies with only short breaks away is a full time job for the few weeks that the pups need to be kept superwarm (it’s like a sauna in the birthing room). Yvette said all she needed was someone to throw icy water on her and flay her with birch sticks to complete the picture!

The 5 gorgeous boys and 3 beautiful girls are all thriving at six days old now. The puppies’ eyes and ears will still be closed for another week and by Week 3 they’ll stop dragging themselves on their front legs (like turtles) and will start to walk.

Already four have lovely homes and families to go to when they’re a little older!

Yvette will return to the club in two weeks when the puppies become a little more independent.

8          The Rotary Foundation

In 2001-2002 RI President Rick King, in seeking to revitalise giving to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International, promoted the concept of Every Rotarian Every Year (EREY) which meant that ideally every Rotarian would contribute to The Foundation each year as part of their philanthropic responsibility as business and professional leaders in society. He suggested a gift of US$100 or more as a reasonable starting point.

Donations (with the application form) are sent to Team Centurion at the address on the application form to be recorded and sent to The Rotary Foundation Trust at Parramatta once a month. A tax-deductible receipt is then sent to the donor via the club. Donations of $100 or more are very welcome. All personal donations are deposited into the Annual Programs Fund, for which the donor gains PHF Recognition points, and the funds support for the Foundation's humanitarian programs. Rotarians whose donations over time reach US$1,000 are eligible to receive a Paul Harris
Fellow award.

Please forward all contributions (including Card payments and Direct Debit payments) directly to the Team Centurion. This enables the Team Centurion and the District Governor to have a complete picture of personal giving to the Annual Programs Fund which assists in the planning for the use of grant funds in our District in coming years.

A strong Rotary Foundation means a strong Rotary.

Senior Computer Skills...

A woman customer called the Canon help desk with a problem with her printer.
Tech support:  Are you running it under windows?
Customer:  'No, my desk is next to the door, but that is a good point.
The man sitting in the cubicle next to me is under a window, and his printer is working fine.'

A man called the help desk for advice....
Tech  support:   'Okay Bob, let's  press the control and escape keys at the same time.
That brings up a task list in the middle of the screen.  Now type the letter 'P' to bring up the Program Manager.'
Customer:         I don't have a P.
Tech  support:  On your keyboard, Bob.
Customer:         What do you mean?
Tech support:  'P'.....on your  keyboard, Bob.
Customer:  I'M NOT GOING TO DO THAT.
