Stories

Welcome back from holidays to Joe who went to exotic Melbourne! We were also ready to welcome Katina back from her travails after contracting legionella pneumonia while in Nigeria, but we had to wait one more week for her recovery.

After normal preliminaries, we held our Club Services meeting and discussion about projects was so robust that President Yvette needed to voice record the ideas that were flowing thick and fast. Directors will develop these ideas and report to the Club at subsequent meetings.

One decision made by the 23 members who attended was that we to meet in the Dining Room and pay a little more for the ambiance than to meet in the Long Tan Room on a "self yourself" basis. Subsequently, President Yvette suggest raising the fees to $23 for our continental breakfast and $25 for the full breakfast. This would ensure that even if we had as little as 21.7 people per meeting, we would meet our room commitment. So don't forget to bring 0.7 of a guest each week so that we can achieve this outcome! If our numbers improve over a sustained period of time, we will reduce this amount commensurate with attendance.

Next week would be an ideal time to invite colleagues and friends to hear Phil Hoffman talk about Sir Donald Bradman; and the week after our own Katina Jones will be telling us about her Nigerian project which other Rotary Clubs have sponsored - an exciting few weeks of speakers that shouldn't be missed.

1.        Does Rotary have a role in preventing terrorism?
In our heightened security environment with, amongst other things, new laws focusing on potential and returning recruits associated with overseas Jihadist campaigns, and in the light of the Sydney Lindt Cafe Siege and the Charlie Hebdo attack, we should ask ourselves, can we do anything to help prevent terrorism, and does Rotary have a role in preventing terrorism?
Sandy Morey is an Inspector with the South Australia Police and is offering himself as a speaker to Rotary clubs in District 9500 (he was supported by District 9500 as a RYLA and GSE participant,
and  District 9520 as a Peace Scholar).  Sandy can be contacted  at        sandy.morey@police.sa.gov.au

Rotary Club of Adelaide Light Mission Statement

To be recognised as the Service Club of Choice in the Eastern Precinct of Adelaide because we are a Friendly Breakfast Club that appeals to a broad range of busy people who want to make a difference to local and international communities.

Here is old age at its best.

Larry and Bob, two friends, met in the park every day to feed the pigeons, watch the squirrels and discuss world problems.

One day Larry didn't show up. Bob didn't think much about it and figured maybe he had a cold or something.. But after Larry hadn't shown up for a week or so, Bob really got worried. However, since the only time they ever got together was at the park, Bob didn't know where Larry lived, so he was unable to find out what had happened to him.

A month had passed, and Bob figured he had seen the last of Larry, but one day, Bob approached the park and -- lo and behold -- there sat Larry! Bob was very excited and happy to see him and told him so. Then he said, ‘For crying out loud Larry, what in the world happened to you?

Larry replied, 'I have been in jail.'

'Jail!' cried Bob. What in the world for?'

'Well,' Larry said, 'you know Jane, that cute little blonde waitress at the coffee shop where I sometimes go?'

'Yeah,' said Bob, 'I remember her. What about her?

'Well, one day she filed rape charges against me; and, at 89 years old, I was so proud that when I got into court, I pleaded 'guilty'.

'The damn judge gave me 30 days for perjury’.
