Stories
After welcoming members, Acting President (for the day) Yvette mentioned that President Miriam's mother had passed away the evening before after a short illness in ICU. Our sincere condolences are extended to Miriam and her family. Club members signed a sympathy card, and Yvette, Dean and Pam attended the funeral service last Thursday to support Miriam at this very sad time on behalf of Club members. Vale Sherifa Khan.

Just a reminder that our breakfast on Thursday 15 October will be at 7.30am at the Bistro area of the Arkaba Hotel and then those who have notified John Wotherspoon will be walking to the nearby SA Film Corp's office. John suggests you park in the Woolies carpark.

Last week's joint meeting with the Rotary Club of Adelaide South celebrated Hat Day - a fundraising event for Rotary's Mental Health programs. We managed to raise $95 for the cause. Our photo shows our Club with their hats on - but the RC of Adelaide South will be holding their own Quiz Night on 23 October (nearly sold out) with all monies raised going towards mental health.

Reminder to keep Saturday 23 November free for The Rotary Foundation's Million Dollar Dinner at the Ian McLachlan Room at the Adelaide Oval, 6.30pm for 7.00pm. Cost $100pp, keynote speaker will be the Rotary International Director Jennifer Jones. Opportunities are available for endowed gifts whether personal, corporate or in someone else's name if the donor wishes to honour someone. Any donation over $10,000 written into your will go towards raising the million dollars. Gifts of USD 25,000 (which can be spread over 3 years)  entitles the donor to be a member of the Arch Klumph Society. The Rotary Foundation invests their funds for three years and uses the interest earned to fund the administration of the Foundation. After three years half of the funds come back to the districts whose clubs and individuals donated the money for club and district initiated projects, and the other half goes into the World Fund to provide matching grants for club projects and to fund the Peace Fellows program.

Guest Speaker
Our surprise guest speaker was our own Dean Sullivan who gave a very entertaining talk (as a former Bank Manager) entitled "How to rob a bank from the inside". He mentioned a few instances when he was notified of suspected fraudulent undertakings by bank employees that he had to investigate, and other wonderful instances of bank employees "borrowing" money that they weren't supposed to. Won't give any details but Dean's talk provided a great insight into pre-computer loopholes that some people manipulated illegally!

3.           Ricky Smith RC Adelaide West
A beautiful letter arrived this week from Ricky (Allan Smith family), concerning our much loved and decorated senior member and father Allan Smith, 94 in January.
After he suffered ill-health some months ago, we were advised that he did not want visitors. He moved from his home on Marion Road into Room 7, Estia Lockleys Aged Care, Henley Beach Road, opposite Airport Road - again no visitors.  Ricky advises that although frail, he now wants to see his old mates. After a life of Rotary service, he loves to sit and reminisce.
The best times to contact him to make an appointment is between 8.30 and 9.30am and again 5 to 6.30pm on 8128-8871. We owe it to the dear man of 32 years of service to Adelaide West Club and to Rotary International, to love and support him. Please make it your Rotary duty to pop in and see him.
Regards
David Sabine

The Four Way Test

Of the things we think, say or do:

  1. Is it the Truth?
  2. Is it Fair to all concerned?
  3. Will it build Goodwill and better Friendships?
  4. Will it be Beneficial to all concerned?

Invocation

For good food, for good fellowship and the opportunity to serve through Rotary, we give thanks

TRAVEL PLANS FOR 2015

I have been in many places, but I've never been in Kahoots. Apparently, you can't go alone. You have to be in Kahoots with someone.

I've also never been in Cognito. I hear no one recognizes you there.

I have, however, been in Sane. They don't have an airport; you have to be driven there. I have made several trips there, thanks to my children, friends, family and work.

I would like to go to Conclusions, but you have to jump, and I'm not too much on physical activity anymore.

I have also been in Doubt. That is a sad place to go, and I try not to visit there too often.

I've been in Flexible, but only when it was very important to stand firm.

Sometimes I'm in Capable, and I go there more often as I'm getting older.

One of my favourite places to be is in Suspense! It really gets the adrenalin flowing and pumps up the old heart! At my age I need all the stimuli I can get!

I may have been in Continent, but I don't remember what country I was in. It's an age thing. They tell me it is very damp there.
