Cindy Aubrey is the President and CEO of Pikes Peak United Way, which serves nearly 100,000 people per year. Prior to United Way, Cindy served as the Chief Communication Officer for the City of Colorado Springs, working closely with the first strong mayor. Before that, she ran the news department, overseeing all news personnel and editorial content at the NBC affiliate, KOAA News 5. A fourth generation Coloradan, Cindy graduated from Colorado State University. She is married with an adult son named Liam.
One of our Rotary family passed away recently. Scott Feller's services will be on Saturday, May 15 at 10 am at Rocky Mountain Calvary Chapel, 4285 N Academy Blvd. There is a livestream option available at https://livestream.com/RMCLIVE/SpecialEvents.
Scott was devoted to our annual FLIGHT event and appreciated for all he did to make the event such a success. He will be sorely missed.
Rotary believes in developing the next generation of leaders. Our programs help younger leaders build leadership skills, expand education and learn the value of service.

Pikes Peak United Way is asking for volunteers to help community members use computers/scanners to apply for the Eviction Protection Program. The details of when/where volunteering will take place are TBD, but will most likely be in the month of May during the evening/weekend hours.

Pikes Peak United Way will be hosting two training opportunities on Saturday, May 15th from 2-3pm. Trainings will be held at Pikes Peak United Way (518 N. Nevada Ave.) and you only need to attend ONE session.
Volunteers must be able to:
Scan and upload documents
Work with our most vulnerable population in a way that is warm, welcoming, and consistent.
Navigate the on-line application system and answer questions.
May of the participants will have experienced much trauma and will need a supportive experience.

International Committee is working on some great projects!
- Joint Project with Denver Mile High Club Uganda mental health is approved and in motion!
- CSF approved $500 for Ashesi University project in Ghana. Distract Grant request submitted. Looking to get other local clubs to partner with us.
- Colorado Haiti Project is continuing on their agriculture project and has changed their name to Locally Haiti.
- We are drafting a request for the Practical Education Network (PEN) in Ghana for funding to help with the transition to online learning because of covid. We got to hear from PEN's CEO & Founder, Dr. Heather Beem recently as one of our speakers for the club's weekly meeting!

"10-Year-Old Refugee, Once Homeless, Becomes National Chess Master: ‘Very Happy’
A 10-year-old boy won the title of National Chess Master on May 1.
Tanitoluwa "Tani" Adewumi's win makes him the 28th youngest person in the country to achieve that high ranking, per the U.S. Chess Federation.
Tani's remarkable abilities as a chess player helped him and his family, refugees from Nigeria, move out of a New York City homeless shelter, according to the New York Times.
Of his latest accomplishment, the 10-year-old told NPR, "I was very happy that I won and that I got the title. I really love that I finally got it."
Tani revealed he practices chess "every day" after school for 10 or 11 hours.
His next goal is becoming the world's youngest grandmaster, he shared with NPR.
The Nigerian refugee will turn 11 this summer, meaning he has just under two years to take the title from Sergey Karjakin, the New York Times reported.
Saint Louis Chess Club/ youtubeTani became recognized in 2019 after he won the New York state chess championship for his age group, earning himself a profile in the New York Times. The accomplishment came just a year after he learned how to play chess at school while living in a homeless shelter.
His family couldn't afford to pay his school's chess program membership at one point, but his chess teacher waived the fees, USA Today reported at the time.
Other individuals also stepped in to support Tani's talents.
"Tani's life was changed in 24 hours. Generous donors and supporters came together outside of GoFundMe and provided us with the housing, legal, and educational resources we needed," an update to the page in April 2019 said.

The now-10-year-old went on to write a book titled My Name Is Tani . . . and I Believe in Miracles. The book was later green-lit for a Paramount film adaption with Trevor Noah as a producer, Deadline reported in November 2019."
