Join us for our breakfast meeting and hear from our guest speaker, Marcel Mongeon from Mongeon Consulting who will be speaking about "everything you need to know about mediation". Marcel Mongeon has more than 20 years of experience in new technology assessment, management, and commercialization. As an independent IP Coach and President of MCI, he has assisted governmental, government-supported and private sector institutions with devising and implementing strategies to profit from their intangible assets. He is an experienced international speaker and seminar leader in many areas, including business strategy, IP management and negotiations, and governance.
Marcel is a lawyer qualified in the Canadian provinces of Ontario and Québec as well as New York State in the USA. He is a Registered Patent and Trade-mark Agent in Canada, and provides mediation services in a number of sectors. He runs and is principal instructor for ezCPD.ca, his own firm offering online Continuing Professional Development for legal professionals.
Marcel holds business, law and science degrees from McGill (B.Com., LL.B., BCL), McMaster (MBA), Swinburne University (MSc) and Strathclyde (LL.M.) and is a Fellow of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada. His work experience includes having been in charge of the technology transfer office at McMaster University overseeing all sponsored research, patenting and commercialization activities of this comprehensive university from 1997 to 2006.
Marcel is a Chartered Director and has served on the boards of, among other organizations, his local chamber of commerce, the Association of University Technology Managers, ACCT Canada and the Canadian University Intellectual Property Group. He is also a part-time deputy judge of the Hamilton Small Claims Court where he adjudicates claims up to the jurisdictional limit of $25,000. |

Please join us as we welcome Randy Hendricks, formerly of Innovation Factory, to talk to us about Social Innovation. Social innovations are new strategies, concepts, ideas and organizations that meet the social needs of different elements which can be from working conditions and education to community development and health — they extend and strengthen civil society. Social innovation includes the social processes of innovation, such as open source methods and techniques and also the innovations which have a social purpose — like online volunteering, microcredit, or distance learning. Randy Hendriks has spent his career empowering young leaders, developing community initiatives, and equipping organizations for success throughout North America. He holds a civil engineering diploma from Mohawk College, advanced degrees in theology from Ottawa University, and completed his Doctoral Thesis at Acadia University on the topic of developing community leaders and building organizational health. Most recently Randy has mentored start-up businesses at Innovation Factory in Hamilton, and currently provides business to business sales and marketing support and training with Venture Accelerator Partners. He is also a founding board member of "Create Hamilton", a new non-profit which supports and empowers social enterprise projects in Hamilton.

Please join us as we welcome Hamilton City Councillor Jason Farr (Ward 2) as our guest speaker. He will share his insights on current City of Hamilton issues, and in particular as they relate to Ward 2. Ward 2, also know as the Downtown area is an urban ward situated in the centre of the city below the Niagara Escarpment (oft en referred to as the Mountain). It is bordered by the Escarpment to the south, Hamilton Harbour to the north and Queen Street to the west. Its eastern border consists of Wellington Street North, Main Street East and Wentworth Street South. Ward 2 is considered the City’s downtown and contains City Hall, Jackson Square, Gore Park, First Ontario Centre, the Hamilton Farmer’s Market, St. Joseph’s Hospital, the Art Gallery of Hamilton and Hamilton Place. In the north section of Ward 2 one can find Harbourfront and Pier 4 Parks, as well as the Hamilton Waterfront Trail which links Wards 1 and 2. Ward 2 is Hamilton’s smallest ward, and is located within the Hamilton Conservati on Authority watershed. Biography - Councillor Jason Farr, Ward 2 - Downtown Hamilton Councillor Jason Farr was born and raised in the inner-city of Hamilton and elected to City Council in 2010 representing Ward 2 – Downtown. During his two terms on Council, Farr has earned a reputation as a very hard working consensus builder and a fun guy to engage on issues with. Farr is a well-known and respected outspoken advocate for sustainable city building; Farr is member and past chair of the Planning and Economic Development Standing Committee and Emergency and Community Services Standing Committee. He proudly serves on many other boards and committees that include, but are not limited to, City Housing Hamilton, the Waterfront Trust, West Harbour Sub-committee, the Arts Advisory Commission and the Downtown Cleanliness and the Security Task-Force and has just been elected to the Supercrawl Board of Directors as a citizen representative. Farr also regularly attends and participates with three Downtown BIA’s and two merchants groups, six Neighbourhood Associations and many other local downtown boards and organizations. He has also established many committees and initiatives like the Safety and Security Task-Force with residents of Social Housing and a safe cycling sub-committee of two area Neighbourhood Associations leading to innovative and safe cycling infrastructure. He has held many town halls respecting a variety of issues that include gun violence, complete streets and pedestrian safety and No-Downtown Casino. Farr is also one of a limited number of Councillors nation-wide who conducts a pubic participatory budgeting exercise where annually residents devise and then vote on one million dollars in city building projects. In his six plus years on council, Councillor Farr has moved many motions aimed at supporting Hamilton’s current and unprecedented Downtown and inner-city revitalization. Here are just some issues and city-building objectives reflected in motions Councillor Farr has crafted and has received tremendous council support on over the last six years. Heritage grants and loans program enhancements. Downtown incentive program grants and loans. Placing nearly 1000 buildings on a new registry of buildings of historical interest. One-way to two-way conversions. Converting 17 City of Hamilton owned and operated downtown surface parking lots into mixed use development (3 currently underway for transformation). Ontario’s longest two-way protected cycling track on Cannon Street. LRT (now in implementation phase). Public Art.

His topic is "Riding the Rustbelt: Bus tours to Pittsburgh, Detroit, Cleveland, and Buffalo" Martinus Geleynse is the founder and Creative Director of Make Media, formerly known as urbanicity Omnimedia, an advertising agency and media distribution company in Hamilton, Ontario. Having recently sold urbanicity Magazine and Hamilton's largest indoor billboard network, Martinus helps small and medium-sized businesses create, refine, and market their brands through conventional media and creative marketing campaigns. Such work has included crowdfunding over $100,000 for The Other Bird restaurant group, creating a city-wide burger festival called Novemburger, and directing communications for Hamilton Mayor Fred Eisenberger's 2014 winning campaign. Martinus also founded and ran the Hamilton 24-Hour Film Festival for 8 years, building it from a coffeehouse festival to the largest of its kind in Canada. He was named Hamilton's Young Entrepreneur of the Year for 2010 by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, and was selected as one of Hamilton-Burlington's Top 40 Under 40 in 2013 by BusinessLink. Please join us as we welcome guest speaker Donna Marcaccio from Rygiel Supports for Community Living who will speak on "Everyone Belongs in the Community!". Donna is the Executive Director at Rygiel Supports For Community Living and has been in that role since 1990. Her career began as a volunteer at Rygiel while in high school, working as a student throughout University and getting involved in various committees and programs locally and provincially. She graduated from McMaster with a degree in Sociology. Donna, later completed a post baccalaureate program in Clinical Behavioural Sciences, a Non- profit Management certificate program and A Human Resources Program. Shortly after university, Donna was employed full time at Rygiel. This was the period when the agency began its de-institutionalization program. Donna was instrumental in carrying this through. Over the years, Donna became certified in values based training and has voluntarily been part of the Southern Ontario Training Group bringing this important training to her agency and to families and staff within the sector across the province and beyond. Donna continues to be involved in various committees locally, provincially and nationally addressing advocacy issues, policy formation. The most important contribution to Donna’s interest, learning and professional development has come from her relationship with her sister Marcia who has a developmental disability. Donna, her daughter and sister live together here in Hamilton.

Along with the fishermen volunteers and the City of Hamilton, our club provides a fun fishing experience to the greater Hamilton region’s special needs community. The derby takes place annually, in the first full week of May, from Monday to Thursday. In all, some 360 participants of all ages get their turn at holding a rod and trying to ‘catch a big one’. Bob Morrow, will be our guest speaker at this mornings meeting. Robert (Bob) Morrow has just retired as a consultant with NASA and the Canadian Space Agency; however he still maintains interest in a project that he started just before retirement, dealing with the growing of vegetables (tomatoes) on the International Space Station and on the surface of Mars.
Bob is a former educator, author of more than 100 books, mostly technical stuff and including three Canadian atlases.
Bob is a Rotarian in Dundas (Dundas Valley Sunrise Rotary Club) and has 25 years perfect attendance. He is currently a District Trainer for Assistant Governors. He is a multiple Paul Harris Fellow and Rotary Benefactor. He was awarded the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award for his contributions to both science and the local community.
In March, Bob was installed as a Lay Canon in the Diocese of Niagara (Anglican) for his work with parishes over the past 25 years.

Ruth Greenspan, the recently appointed Executive Director of the John Howard Society will present along with Donna Dejong, Kelly Burke and Hodon Abdi. Ruth Greenspan is a social worker, a community advocate, a community engager, a manager, an educator, a parent, a partner and a group facilitator. She completed her undergraduate degree at Carleton University in law and psychology and her graduate degree an MSW at the University of Toronto. Hamilton has been her home with her partner and 3 children for the last 27 years. Ruth has worked and volunteered in the Ottawa, Hamilton, and Toronto Community with various organizations, both non-profit and government working from an anti-oppressive framework. She has primarily worked at the front line and as a manager with agencies and programs serving individuals who have been homeless, underemployed, living in poverty, racialized, ,and those who are survivors of violence. In her 32 years working in the field she has worked at Mohawk College in the Continuing Education Program, Social Service Worker Program for the last 17 years and for the last 2 has worked in the Neighborhood Leadership Institute for Mohawk College and the Hamilton Community Foundation. In 2005 she won the Status of Woman and YWCA Woman of the Year Award for Community Development and Social Activism, and in 2012, 2013 The Mohawk College Continuing Education Instructor of the Year. Ruth began working in the community with individuals at risk and in conflict with the law and is excited to return to this focus, In her free time you can find her working out at the YMCA, doing Yoga, engaged in community events, officiating at weddings and walking her dog Lincoln. She is recently an empty nester and is filling the time that has been spent court, arena and field side for the last 20 years. |

Estella Jones, Principal at Hess St School will share some results from this year's Rotary Reading Buddy program based on the "Take 5 Reading Intervention" approach. Estella Jones has been in education for 18 years. First as a high school math and science teacher, then as a math and assessment consultant for the board. As a vice-principal, she has supported staff and students at Delta, Saltfleet, Hill Park, and Sherwood secondary schools. This past September, Estella transitioned to her first experience as principal in an elementary school at Hess St. School. She hopes to share her passion for numeracy, coding and robotics, and to provide lots of authentic experiences for her students. |

Please join us as we welcome guest speaker Paul Johnson to provide an update on Hamilton's LRT Project. Paul's bio is below. Paul Johnson Director, LRT Project Coordination, Planning and Economic Development Department, City of Hamilton Paul Johnson is the Director of LRT Project Coordination for the City of Hamilton. In this role Paul leads a project team responsible for working collaboratively with Metrolinx to ensure the completion of the Hamilton Light Rail Transit (LRT) Project. This project is a major urban renewal project for the City of Hamilton and will also require significant engagement with a variety of stakeholders.
Paul joined the City of Hamilton in 2010 to spearhead the development of the City’s healthy neighbourhood initiative. Now called the Neighbourhood Action Strategy, the City of Hamilton is working with residents, business and other key institutions to build neighbourhoods across Hamilton that are great places to live, work, play and learn. Most recently Paul was the Director of Corporate Initiatives for the City of Hamilton. In this role Paul worked with the Senior Management Team to implement strategic priorities.
Born, raised and educated in Hamilton, Paul’s background includes work in the non-profit sector as Executive Director of Wesley Urban Ministries and in the private sector with Compaq Computer Limited. Paul is starting his 27th season as a basketball referee and has officiated at the local, provincial and national level. |

Deirdre Pike - Bio Deirdre Pike's fascination for sharing stories drives who she is and what she does as both a Senior Social Planner for the Social Planning and Research Council of Hamilton (SPRC) and columnist for The Hamilton Spectator. In both roles, Pike sees it as her responsibility to facilitate conversation and to improve community engagement. Working closely with Hamilton Organizing for Poverty Elimination (HOPE) and Hamilton’s Roundtable for Poverty Reduction, Deirdre is assisting the community to understand the impact of income inequality on individual lives and the life of the community as a whole. As a voice for the LGBTQ community, Deirdre explains that she is not a representative for the community as a whole, but rather one voice from this distinct community of communities. Through this leadership position, Deirdre wants to let the voices of marginalized people to be heard and to encourage others to accept being counter-cultural.
She lives with her partner, Renee, in Hamilton’s Strathcona Neighbourhood where she cooks, cycles, gardens and plays tennis. |

Susan Creer from the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction will be this morning's guest speaker. Susan is a local gal with a strong interest in people as well as disability and poverty concerns. Susan has been volunteering since she was a teen and continues to do so. Susan’s background includes professional and community theatre, event planning, administration, professional public speaking. Susan has a B.A. 01 (double major in Psychology and Theatre Arts) from Redeemer University College and also an Event and Conference Management Certificate from Mohawk College, ‘12. Susan is the Chair of ‘Accessible Hamilton’ a local advocacy group her Canada 150 project. She is a member of her local Ainslie Wood Community group. Susan works part-time teaching acting to children/youth for the City Recreation Department and that contract has just ended. Susan is a speaker with the Hamilton Roundtable for Poverty Reduction ‘Speak Now’ bureau. Susan is looking for work and is interested in starting her own business. Susan is also an Associate board member of the Routes Youth Centre in Dundas as well as a Toastmaster International club member. Susan writes opinion/editorial pieces for the Spectator, LinkedIn and the Mohawk College alumni blog. Susan is an advocate from the pulpit, podium and in print. Hamilton poverty… By the Numbers:

The regular club meeting will move off site in order to tour the new Rygiel Supports for Community Living Administrative Offices. Your hosts will be Donna Marcaccio, Executive Director and John Baxter, Director of Operations. Rygiel Services and SupportsRygiel Supports for Community Living is one of 10 agencies in the Developmental Services sector in Hamilton. Together we attempt to provide a continuum of services to our citizens who live with a developmental disability. Each agency focuses on one or more specific components of the continuum. Rygiel Supports for Community Living’s mandate directs us to support children and adults who have a developmental disability with other multiple handicapping conditions. Current Service RecipientsPresently, Rygiel Supports for Community Living supports 186 by providing full time residential services, respite services and some day supports. How Is Service Provided?Our model is a community-based, integrated model. Homes of 2, 3 or 4 full time residents welcome people for respite on a regular basis. Currently, Rygiel supports children and adults who are living in 40 various locations throughout the community. Some small, congregate day supports are provided to other community members at 2 sites. Our goal is to help people live fully in their community which includes access to and use of generic amenities and services. How Can Someone Access Our Service?An individual (or his/her family) in need of service should make the need known to CONTACT Hamilton at 905-570-8888. An “Intake” is completed and referrals are forwarded to the appropriate agencies. Respite ServicesRygiel is committed to supporting families and family life. One opportunity to do so is through respite services whereby Rygiel will support for short periods of time the family member who has a disability.
Day Supports Personal growth and quality of life are enhanced through valued social roles. This is the focus of day support services.

Michael Parente from Hamilton HIVE will present on current and future HIVE initiatives. Born and raised in Hamilton, Michael is eager to contribute to this amazing city. He has honed in on his passion for the Public Relations field through volunteering with local non-profit organizations. He studied at McMaster University and graduated with a Masters degree in Political Science. He also has a diploma in Public Relations. He currently works at the Hamilton Community Foundation as a communications coordinator and is dedicated to contributing to a robust, healthy and prosperous Hamilton.
