CLUB MEETING 4/1/20 BY ZOOM WITH SPEAKER ABE POWELL ON NEIGHBORHOOD COOPERATION IN A PANDEMIC
Abe Powell
The next meeting of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise is scheduled for Wednesday, April 1st at 7:30 a.m. (note new time).
Our speaker will be Abe Powell. Abe has 23 years of experience as a community organizer in the areas of environmental protection, community resilience and public safety. He served as President of the Mountain Drive Community Association for 5 years where he also served as a volunteer firefighter.
After the Tea Fire burned 210 homes in the Mountain Drive Community, he served as the volunteer Director of Relief Services for 4 years. He served as President of Get Oil Out! Inc., an environmental protection organization in Santa Barbara, for 14 years. He is currently a Director of the Montecito Fire Protection District and a Trustee at the Santa Barbara Middle School.

Put yourself on mute when you are not talking (this will avoid noise around you from interrupting the meeting (dog barking, etc.)
Pause during sentences
Do not interrupt until the speaker is finished. (The meeting leader will do the interrupting if necessary).
COMMUNITY SERVICE COMMITTEE MEETING TUESDAY, 3/31/20
A Mask Pattern
The Community Service Committee will meet by Zoom on Tuesday, March 31st at 8:00 a.m. to discuss volunteer efforts that club members might carry out during this time of "stay at home."
The membership committee will meet on Wednesday, April 1 at noon by Zoom. Eric will send out the connection information.
COFFEE AND CONNECT MEETINGS
President Sandra invites all club members to join her for Coffee and Connectmeetings Wednesday mornings during April at 7:30 a.m. by Zoom. BYO coffee. These are unofficial meetings; no agenda. Come as you are (even in PJ's!) to chat with each other and stay in touch. Look for the Zoom connection information for April, 8, 22 and 29 (note: not April 15) that will come by email.

The RC of SB Sunrise Club Board will hold a meeting on Tuesday, April 21 at 7:30 a.m. Agenda and connection information to come.
HAPPY HOUR LAST THURSDAY
A selection of club members at Happy Hour
A number of club members poured their cocktails and joined in the remote Happy Hour on Thursday, March 26th at 5:30 p.m. We discovered that those with up-to-date computer systems were able to put fancy backgrounds behind them. It looked as though Gabriel and Eric were both in Hawaii. This is the only way Eric will have a taste of Hawaii this year because RI has had to cancel the Convention planned for Honolulu in June.
Various people shared the books they are reading and everyone was happy to see Tom P. looking good after his surgery.
How quickly we are adapting to the changes in our lives right now.
HAPPY NEWS FROM KIRK AND JANN
From Kirk: "Our 4/25 wedding ceremony was postponed due to the coronavirus. So we decided to get married 3/26 with our pastor (and Jann’s longtime friend) with two good friends as witnesses—all socially-distanced of course. We will reschedule to party and review our vows sometime later this year. Meanwhile we are now happily married—Mr. & Mrs. Greene.
And we just drove 1,200 miles from SEA to Santa Barbara in 17 hours—might as well self-quarantine in the sun."

MEETING NOTES 3/25/20
Present: Sandra O’Meara, President; Chris Baxter,Bruce Belfiore, Steve Boehm, Scott Burns, Ellen Chase, Burt Chortkoff, Jody Dolan Holehouse, Connard Hogan, Karen Kawaguchi, Judith McCaffrey, Janet Napier, Joanne Orenstein, Luz Maria Ortiz Smith, Eric Ryan, Kathy Scroggs, E. Russell Smith, Diana Washburn. (Apologies if anyone was missed).
This was an extraordinary meeting of the club to test out Zoom. The next regular meeting will be held Wednesday, April 1st. Sandra called the meeting to order at 7:00 a.m.
Volunteer Opportunities: Discussion took place regarding various volunteer opportunities in which club members could participate during this “stay at home” period, such as writing letters to health care workers, sewing face masks, checking in with people by phone each day, etc. Judith mentioned that, a few weeks ago, Cottage had said it did not need masks but has now announced they will accept them. Deaconess Hospitals published the first pattern for masks and now others are available on line. The Community Service Committee will hold a meeting on Tuesday, March 31st at 8:00 a.m. to determine how to move forward with these ideas.
Announcements:
Bruce had to leave the meeting early to be interviewed about call centers and the corona virus.
Sandra informed that her son was part of a team of 40-50 people who wrote a paper to find known drugs that might interact with the corona virus. They are sending the paper to the Pasteur Lab in France.
Steve asked if the Dolphin Dive was canceled, which it has. He asked about a later date but we can’t get City permits right now.
Sandra attended the District Assembly last Saturday remotely. It was inspiring. Some clubs have closed down completely right now while others, like ours, are meeting by Zoom.
30 seconds of Your World: Scott suggested that, at each meeting, we should give everyone a chance, for 30 seconds, to talk about what is going on in their world. Sandra said she is walking, often on the beach; it depends on the tides. Diana W. said she is doing yard work and writing. Connard noted he had planted vegetable seeds and a few plants. Judith said she is walking, sewing and planting. They celebrated Paul’s mom’s birthday a few days ago; she is now living with them. Burt said his daughter had visited for a week but has returned to San Diego; she was not looking forward to going back as she is an OB/GYN. He has also been walking his dog. Ellen has been working. She recently had a Zoom meeting with 50 sorority sisters from between 1978 – 82, some of whom hadn’t communicated in ages. Connard said he called his cousin whom he hadn’t seen in ten years. Jody has been working remotely as their office is officially closed. However, the technology is slow with them all using one server remotely. Chris said Karen has been working from home. He has been in touch with his parents who live in an assisted living home in Davis where the staff have good protocols in place.
Next week’s meeting: Sandra has tried to contact our planned speaker to see if he is still available by Zoom. If not, he has a YouTube presentation we can view. Kathy mentioned we could view the presentation ourselves before the club meeting and be prepared to have a discussion at the meeting. Scott also recommended TED talks for future meetings.
Adjournment: the meeting adjourned at 8:30 a.m.
