PROGRAM 1/29/20: SANTA BARBARA 100 YEARS AGO WITH BETSY J. GREEN
The soldiers from WWI return home, the Lockheeds build more planes, a "Human Fly" climbs a building on State Street, a Polish-Russian count buys land on the Mesa, Cecil B. DeMille makes a movie on Santa Cruz Island, 1,500 people dance at the Carrillo Recreation Center, ragtime bands play at the bandshell in Pershing Park, actor Douglas Fairbanks drops by, a couple gets married in an airplane, a king and queen are welcomed, and the year ends with a shootout at the post office. Betsy J. Green has been a writer for more than 25 years. As a freelancer, she contributed articles to newspapers and magazines in the U.S. and abroad. She specializes in writing about local history, architecture, and the environment. She researched and wrote about the history of more than 85 homes, and was responsible for nominating five properties to the National Register of Historic Places. Green is a former associate editor of Reader's Digest and staff editor of World Book Encyclopedia.
DICTIONARY DELIVERY TIME
This year our Club will be delivering dictionaries to 9 schools and the 1st phase of the deliveries are scheduled as follows:
Tuesday, January 28, 8:40 a.m. at Washington, 290 Lighthouse Road
Wednesday, January 29, 11:15 a.m. at Hope, 3976 A La Colina Rd.
Friday, January 31, 12:45 p.m. at Monte Vista, 730 North Hope Ave.
Friday, February 7, 1:30 p.m. at Peabody, 3018 Calle Noguera
Monday, February 24, 10:00 a.m. at Vieja Valley, 434 Nogal Dr.
Please check your calendar to see if you can participate. If you have never participated in this activity, you'll enjoy instant gratification witnessing the effect that these dictionaries have on the students.
Club member, Tom Putnam, is now home from Cottage Rehab. Linda Putnam has hurt her knee but, fortunately, their daughter has been visiting to help out. Once daughter Ashley goes back home, Linda said she would very much appreciate club members dropping off dinner once in a while. If you are willing to take a turn at providing dinner, let Janet know and she will coordinate so there's only one dinner at a time.

FIRESIDE CHAT - THURSDAY, 1/30/20 6:00-8:00 PM
Join members of the membership committee on Thursday, January 30th from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. for a fireside chat at the home of President-Elect and Membership Chair, Eric Ryan, 1424 San Miguel Avenue, Santa Barbara (on the Mesa).

Although Rotary is thoroughly decentralized, it is not a simple organization. From the local club to Rotary International, the organizational chart can be mind-boggling to a veteran member not to mention a new member. Many of us might need a refresher course.
Then there are the finances. Why do we pay dues? How much does breakfast cost? What is the club foundation? What is The Rotary Foundation? How do these various buckets of funds interact? How do RI and/or District Grants work? If you can't clearly answer all these questions, you need to attend the Fireside Chat.
Next are the opportunities for humanitarian projects, aka Avenues of Service. If you are not aware of all the ways to give back, pay it forward, or fulfill any other philanthropic impulses, you need to attend the Fireside Chat.
Finally are the less obvious benefits of being a Rotarian. You have free executive training, extensive high-level networking, and social activities to fill your dance card. Did you know what an amazing organization you were a part of? You might need a booster shot, come to the Fireside Chat.
Anyone who wants to learn more about Rotary is invited. That includes new members, potential members, past speakers, members needing a refresher, and any friends that have asked you "What's this Rotary thing you're always talking about?"
On top of the priceless detailed info you'll get, you'll enjoy free food and drinks AND the opportunity to ask those questions that have been eating at you forever.

ROTARY LADIES OUT AND ABOUT - THURSDAY, 2/6/20
The women of Rotary are invited to an "Out and About" on Thursday evening, February 6. We will meet at 5:30 p.m. by the Turtle Fountain in La Arcada. Details to come.
HAPPY HOUR - THURSDAY, 2/27/20 AT THE BLUEWATER GRILL
We'll head to the Bluewater Grill, 15 E. Cabrillo St., for great views from their bar area upstairs and seafood delicacies. Happy hour runs from 3:00 - 6:00 p.m. but we'll gather after work.
