This week's meeting includes a presentation by Peter Schlegel, Program Specialist with the regional Educational Service Center (ESD). There are several ESD's around the State and they offer support for public school educators and staff. Peter's role with our ESD is in the Special Programs and Services Department providing pre-employment transition services for older youth that have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) and/or a documented disability. His group works with organizations and companies to help students gain valuable employment skills. This presentation is another in our annual "State of the School District" series.

Wednesday is our first Farmers Market visit this year. Thank you to our members that will help our community understand what Rotary is all about. We will be at the Market every other week.

Lastly, Wednesday is the last day to sign up for our Annual Installation Banquet. This will be a great time to say thank you to President Don and welcome President-Elect Ron! Contact Ilene Lavering to sign up.

Scholarship Award Ceremony

The Lake Stevens Rotary Club has awarded $25,000 of College Scholarships to ten very deserving Lake Stevens High School graduates. We have had a great engagement with Rotary Club members reading applications, doing in-person interviews and determining award recipients this year.

We would like to recognize Kim LaFortune, Career Guidance Specialist at LSHS and Kayla Miller at Sno-Isle TECH Skills Center for their assistance in getting great candidates to apply. This funding is made possible by fundraising we do in our local communities. If you would like to support scholarships for LSHS Students in the future and or learn more about what Lake Stevens does please contact our Club Secretary by email.

Accepting the Dean Franz Scholarship Award from Debe Franz was Evan Wellman.

Accepting the Sam Low Scholarship but was unavailable was Seth Haack. Marina Pearson was awarded the Gregory Masten Memorial Rotary Scholarship. The Loren and Lorna Hole Rotary Scholarship was awarded to Ava McGee and Dr. Jae Hong provided funding for a Rotary Scholarship award again this year.

Lake Stevens Parks

Our special guest speaker on Friday, May 31st was Jill Meis, City of Lake Stevens Parks Planning Coordinator. The Lake Stevens Parks Department officially started in 2022. The Vision of the Parks and Recreation Department are to enrich the lives through our commitment to: Play, Engage, Access and Stewardship.

In the community, they strive to engage the public, promote healthy lifestyles, encourage inclusiveness and foster community identity. Part of that inclusiveness a request was made by the public to have communications boards for non-verbal children and adults. The Parks Department worked with Sherwood Community Services on the development of these Communications Boards. Rotary agreed to sponsor three of the Communication Boards with the Rotary brand on each board which cost $2,528. The Communication Boards are one-sided at this point. The goal is to have these Communication Boards set up by summer.

At the Lake Stevens Rotary Club meetings, our people of action come together to strengthen their connections to friends and neighbors and their commitment to improving the lives in our Lake Stevens community and around the district and globe.

Who can Join? We're looking for people in the Lake Stevens area community who want to give back to their community. Join us at our weekly meetings on Friday morning at 7:30 am at the Lake Stevens School District Educational Service Center Lower Level Community Room. Check us out.

What are the Benefits? The picture above is the audience from the scholarship 2024 presentation. Becoming a Rotary member connects you with a diverse group of individuals who share your drive to give back to the Lake Stevens community. This is done, through regular meetings and events such as the Aqua fest corn booth, Farmers Market, Corks and Kegs Annual fundraiser, street and park cleanup and so much more.

Discuss your community's needs and develop creative ways to meet them such as early backing of the Rotary Skate Park off 20th Avenue SE. Connect with other local leaders who are changing the community and expand your leadership and professional skills. Just a few thoughts that represent our Rotary core values.
