The program at this week's meeting includes a presentation by Shannon Coy, the publisher of Snohomish Lifestyle, a community-focused magazine that aims to connect the people, places and events that make Snohomish special. The publication is part of Lifestyle Publications, LLC that has operations in 275 communities in 38 states including three other cities in Washington. Find out how a publication like this is relevant in today's video-saturated information world. Could this be something that would work in Lake Stevens?

Also, don't forget to sign up for the District Assembly coming up on April 6th. All members are welcome to participate and the first five are paid for. Will you be one of those five? Our Club pays for five people to participate whether or not we send people. The Assembly is an excellent training opportunity for Rotarians of all experiences. This is for New Club Officers, Rotarians who want to network, develop relations with other Rotarians, learn from other Rotarians in our District, and newer Rotarians who would like to better understand the value and meaning of Rotary. The Scholarship Application is now live! Share the news with the students in the Lake Stevens School District. The Deadline is Friday, April 12th! We have two applications available- one for those who want to pursue higher education at a college or university, the other for those interested in trade, vocational or technical schools. Animal Welfare in Action

Our very special guest and weekly program speaker on Friday, March 22nd was Kathleen Olson, Assistant District Governor Area J and District Governor Nominee Designate and will serve as District Governor in 2026-27 who talked about "Animal Welfare In Action." Working with The Humane Society of the United States and The HSUS Animal Rescue team to help save animals who are victims of animal cruelty or neglect and from natural disasters. They assist in the ongoing care of rescued dogs and cats while providing safe animal handling, feeding, enrichment preparation, kennel cleaning to administrative tasks, all utilizing animal rescue volunteers.

They use a "Fear Free" approach to slowly encourage dogs to relax and trust humans. These pets stay at the center for as long as they're making progress, however small to prepare them for adoption.

Who can Volunteer? All volunteers must be at least 18 years old, meet the essential capabilities requirements to work with dogs and cats, pass a criminal background check, complete Fear Free Sheltering Training; complete FEMA 100, 200 & 700 Disaster Training and have some experience caring for pets.

Animal Rescue Organizations in Snohomish and Skagit Counties include the Everett Animal Services Municipal Shelter; NOAH Animal Adoption Center and Spay & Neuter Clinic; Pasado's Safe Haven; Progressive Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) Animal Shelters and Wildlife Center; Sarvey Wildlife Center, Humane Society of Skagit Valley and Purrfect Pals Cat Adoption Centers.

Kathleen's classification is Animal Welfare and she has been involved since 1998 starting out at Pt. Defiance Zoological Society, Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County and Purrfect Pals Cat Adoption Center. Kathleen joined the Tacoma #8 Rotary Club in 1994 and was Club President 2004-2005, moving to the Marysville Rotary Club in 2018 and transferred to the Arlington Rotary Club in 2021 closer to home and work. Kathleen is a Paul Harris Fellow X8Xand a Rotary Foundation Benefactor.

Scholarship Application Now Available!

The 2024 Rotary Club of Lake Stevens Scholarship Application is now available! The process is done completely online. Click this link to get started. Students can choose to apply for the college and university scholarship or the vocational, technical or trade school scholarship. Students, please read the instructions carefully. Make sure you fully understand the questions and demonstrate in your answers that you have done your research. The deadline is Friday, April 12, 2024. Applicants are then selected for interviews and scholarships are awarded at one of our Club Meetings in later May.
