Some of his work has been with renowned directors such as David Lynch, Colin Trevorrow and Richard Linklater. Dave's goal is to find new ways to make the Northwest look great on screen. Commercials are the more profitable business for him and the other members of the Washington State Film Industry, Clients include Nike, Microsoft and the Washington State Lottery. He has been the Location Manager for several Washington-based films and television shows such as Grey's Anatomy, Twin Peaks: The Return and the recently released Captain Fantastic. A Location Scout looks for sites all over Washington for specific needs of the Director. His job includes negotiating with a home owner or landowner for the use of their property including all fees. Location Scouting involves looking at many sites. In one case, he scouted over 150 locations in Washington State. His most recent work has been on the film Captain Fantastic. Once a location is selected, Dave becomes the Location Manager which is basically a logistics manager, setting up all of the equipment, permits, police support and various local, state and federal requirements. Dave said, very few Location Scouts dream of getting into the business. It just happens for one reason or another. Granite Falls was used as one site. Lynn Shelton, an independent film director, favors our state and loves to work in Washington. Recently filmed Outside In which will be premiered in Toronto in the very near future. Getting the film industry to do movies or tv shows here depend on the amount of tax incentives or tax credits available to them. There are over 1,000 employees of the Washington State Film Industry. Dave attended the University of Washington and majored in Communications. Before getting involved with the film industry, he worked at a software company for eight years before moving into corporate videos for companyies like Microsoft. Friends asked Dave to scout a special location with two houses with special lay-out requirements. Current project is "Where Did You Go Bernadetta" with director Richard Linklater. Last month, he worked on Grey's Anatomy. Dave is paid under contract but becomes an employee of the project even though he is a freelancer. Featured films are not where the money is...high end commercials are the prime source of income for most people in the industry. Washington State has $3.5 million dollars used for tax incentives/credits whereas Oregon has $14 million. Washington needs to increase the number of dollars set aside for the film industry if we want more business from movie and tv producers.
