Please Note: In honour of Truth & Reconciliation Day, there will be no meeting Wednesday, June 30th.
To honour this important day, we encourage members to take time to reflect on the history and ongoing impacts of residential schools, learn more about the experiences of Indigenous Peoples, and consider how each of us can contribute to the journey of truth, reconciliation, understanding, and respect.
Our Sept.23rd Club Meeting:
Gaye, the lead of the Rotary Starfish Program, was presented with a cheque from a portion of the proceeds of our Rotary 50/50 draw.
The Starfish Program is a vital Rotary initiative that provides food assistance to children in need.
Through the collaborative efforts of the Tri-Cities Rotary clubs, volunteers assemble food hampers and coordinate the pickup and delivery of food to local schools, helping support vulnerable children and families throughout the Tri-Cities community.
A special Thank You to Gaye and everyone on her her team for making a meaningful difference in the lives of children and helping to build stronger, healthier communities.
This week's guest speaker was Abby, who shared highlights from her Rotary Youth Student Exchange experience in Brazil.
About Brazil:
- Brazil has a population of approximately 214 million people.
- The official language is Portuguese, not Spanish.
- The country is known for its rainforests, diverse wildlife, and beautiful beaches.
- Agriculture plays a significant role in the nation's economy.
Abby’s Exchange Experience:
- Abby spoke about experiencing homesickness when she first arrived, something many exchange students face when leaving home.
- As she became more comfortable and developed new friendships, she gained greater independence and learned to be responsible for herself.
- She also experienced culture shock and learned to adapt to different traditions and social customs.
- One cultural difference she noted was Brazil's warm and affectionate nature, where hugging is common. Although unfamiliar at first, she grew to appreciate it.
Abby shared that her exchange experience opened her eyes to the many opportunities and perspectives that exist around the world.
It encouraged her to continue exploring new places and experiences while helping her become more adaptable, confident, and independent.

On behalf of our club, President Nominee Monica proudly presented the Paul Harris Fellow Award to Joan.
The Paul Harris Fellow Award is one of Rotary's highest recognitions, honoring individuals who demonstrate outstanding service and a commitment to the ideals of Rotary.
Congratulations to Joan on this well-deserved recognition and thank you for your dedication and contributions to our community.

The Terry Fox Run took place on Sunday at Rocky Point Park, with the community turning out in impressive numbers.
It was a beautiful day for the event, with sunshine and great community spirit.
The run attracted the largest turnout seen in years, demonstrating the continued impact of Terry Fox's legacy. Participants of all ages came together to support cancer research and celebrate Terry's vision of hope and perseverance.
Thank you to everyone who participated, volunteered, donated, and helped make this year's Terry Fox Run such a tremendous success.

In addition to her adding to her wine cooler, Monica stepped up to fill in for President Darrell, successfully planning and leading this week's club meeting.
